Has anyone ever done this? I am having my first poetry slam in my class next week!

POETRY SLAM -
Each child is going to read a poem in front of the class They have been working on their poetry notebooks for the past few weeks. - my room is going ot be decorated like a coffee shop - white table cloths on the tables and groups - - i have flameless candles, and a spotlight in the front of the room (I am dimming the lights), and my kids are going to speak in a microphone. They are SOOO excited. everyone is wearing black. I even sent out invitations to parents... We are snapping after each poem instead of clapping - Very coffee house style! It made them work even harder on their poetry notebooks the past two weeks!

I just started a poetry unit with my students. My plan is to end the unit with a poetry slam celebration. I have never done anything like this before. Will you please let me know how it turns out? And what did your invitations look like? Were they creative?

Thanks and good luck!!

It is more of a poetry slam brochure for parents - informing them of what is going on in our class, what the poetry slam is, what day and time.... etc... I attached it here... I will let you know how the SLAM goes next Tuesday...

I am having the students illustrate the poem they are presenting... I am posting all the pictures on the board so parents can see them afterwards.... I have had many parents infom me they are coming... The kids are SOO excited.. I am also giving out Poetry Slam certificates to the students afterwards... I am also having a coffee pot going in the back in case the parents want coffee. Are you going to do about the same? Any other suggestions?

Thanks for showing me your brochure. It looks great!! It's awesome that so many parents said they are coming to your event. I was going to provide some snacks too. And I like the idea of the students illustrating their poems.
Are you able to take pictures? If so, I would love to see them. I will take some pics too and we can share for next year!!

How'd it go?? We would love to see some pictures of your poetry slam!

We are having a poetry "cafe" in a couple of weeks. I'm a bit nervous about it!

Do you have any tips?? What would you do differently next year?

Did you serve food? What did you have??

Thanks so much for your info.....pictures would be great, too!!!

We just had it today! The kids ALL came dressed in black! Some even had cute hats (one's you would wear in a coffee shop).... Tons of parents came, the AP and the principal, they drank the coffee, ate the coffee cake, enjoyed some jazz before we began... the atmosphere was perfect!! I had pictures and poems the kids made all over the room. I even had a spotlight on the front of the room, where the students read their poetry!!! The kids were a little nervous, but overall did a great job!!! Next time, I will practice more using the microphone (we didn't practice - some of them talked a little to low).... I also had about 15 minutes leftover. Next time I may have them read two poems or have a few groups read poems from famous poets, etc.... The poetry went by in about 35 - 40 minutes.... Other than that (and it was minor) everything was perfect!!! I will post a few pics of the room after I download them - as for tonight, I am tired and going to bed early!!! I will definitely do this every year from now on!!! What a great activity!

I'm so glad to hear it went well for you!! Mine is scheduled for next week. I have lots of parents who have RSVP's already, and my kids are so excited!

I wasn't sure what to serve for them. I don't want to spend a ton of money, but I do want a small snack for everyone. Did you make the coffee cake?

I love your idea of having jazz play in the background! I hadn't thought of that! I bought some bulletin board paper that looks like a brick wall. I'm going to put it on my chalkboard and have the kids sit in front of it on the stool. Should be cute!

One more question.....what did you use for a spotlight?

I'm sure it was a day your kids will never, ever forget! I know the hard work is worth it! Be proud of yourself!

We are having one for our 6th -8th graders student volunteers on Wednesday in our school library. My five 5th grade classes will serve as the audience members along with parents, teachers, and special guests from the community. The newspaper will be on hand to publish an article. An "anthology" will be compiled with all of the pieces read aloud. Anyone you participated will receive a copy! We can't wait to see how it turns out!

Hind-sight is 20/20...RATS. I wish I would have seen this before I was done student teaching. I did a poetry unit with my 5th graders and I would have LOVED to do this for them. Filing it away for my future students!

Thanks for all the wonderful ideas - inspires me to go for it

Is either April or May - that would be a good time - That's when I had mine last year.... and it gives me time to get the students really used to poetry throughout the year.

My sixth graders have been enjoying poems, analyzing some, and writing their own. We are collecting our samples that I was going to put in book format...maybe we'll do the readings first. Thanks for the inspiration.
