Friends, what is the distinction between science and engineering? Are there STEM state standards that clarify?

Scientists pursue knowledge to answer questions about the universe. Engineers apply that knowledge to create something or to solve a problem. Certainly there is overlap between those two fields, but that is a general definition, based on my own knowledge and a Google search. The NGSS standards have Science and Engineering Practices you can look at, but I believe it treats them as connected.
