Go buy Debbie Miller's book, Reading For Meaning. A great resource for teaching first grade readers workshop.

I love Linda Hoyt's Interactive Read Alouds for K-1. It has lessons that you can do whole group in lots of areas and suggestions for several other books to use with a particular topic (theme, alliteration, climax, characters, inference, etc) I choose a topic for the week and teach a lesson each day on that topic. Most books are available in our school library if I don't have them myself. The lessons are very easy to follow, and pretty easy to change to use with the other suggested books. Here is some info and some sample lessons:

good luck!

SUEZM1231 posted some great lessons.

Here is what most teacher's doing RW here seem to do. For the beginning of the year use the mini lessons from Growing Readers. That is great for setting up the RW and dcoding strategies. I actually used the non-fic unit this year too. Around the holidays I started into Debbie's Miller's Reading With Meaning and I went through all the comprehension strategies. I actually have taught 2nd in the past and use her stuff in 2nd too.

Truthfully the most important thing you need to do is set up a systems where the kids are actively and independently reading everyday and partner reading. If you have those procedure going the rest will fall into place more easily.

Your website is so helpful! I really like your 1st grade helper. Thank You!

I am also a new 1st grade teacher starting out and I have no idea how to use reading workshop or writing workshop with the block periods. I think I understand the gist of it but Sept. is quickly approaching. Could you please email me those units you suggested? It would be greatly appreciated!! dianarestivo at hotmail dot com

Go to the Sunflower room that has Debbie Miller. There are some ideas in there. One of the post has a great link to it. When you click on it go to the Elementary Curriculum part. There are some mini-lessons to go by. Also, if you go into the room that has picture books to teach with you may find some books to go along with it.
