I was just wondering if anyone has a good way of organizing student files?

I use 2 tubs that hold hanging files (my school purchased them 10 years ago but they still sell that at stores like Staples). One tub is for me to keep all of my tests district, math and LA. The other tub is used for filing the student work that will be sent home each week. A parent volunteer usually works with that tub.

I hope that helps.

I have hanging folders also but use the number system. For example, #1 is first child in class alphabetically, cubbies, mailboxes, etc. are all assigned this way too, We don't get our class lists until the day before school starts so this alleviates staying up to midnight labeling all of the folders.

We are required by law to keep our students files with personal info locked in our file cabinets, so I have those in there. For students' daily work that goes home at the end of each week, I have hanging files (I give my students' numbers too!) that their checked work goes into. My assistant usually files those and then on Monday, places them in the folders to go home. I also have the third set of files behind my desk for all of the artifacts and papers that go in their end of the year portfolio. These are things like work samples, progress reports, writing prompts and the like. Hope this helps!
