ethical question?

I am a language arts teacher and was asked by a co worker to proof papers for her science class because they are being entered into a contest. What should I check for besides punctuation and spelling and structure? I am concerned that if I "grade" the papers that it wouldn't be right. Is it common practice to do this when the papers are entered into a competition with the same age group? I just don't know what is right? Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks for any help!

I would proof for common errors. Look for thins like capitalization mistakes and the most common of spelling and subject-verb agreement errors. Beyond that, I would avoid doing anything else. You can't change too much on the papers, then it would look like the kids didn't write them.

Have you looked at the competition rules? An essay competition my students just entered had them sign a statement that the piece is entirely their own work, which I interpreted to mean no proofing by anyone else other than the writer.
