We lost our dog today

It was awful. I felt so bad for him. We had taken him to the vet last Wednesday. I thought then he would have to be put down then, but the vet gave him a shot of antibiotics and steroids and sent medicine home. He rallied the next day and was doing much better. He started eating again, but it didn't last. Our followup appt. was today. Yesterday we knew what had to be done. He had stopped eating everything, but chicken, but couldn't keep the chicken down. I had been thinking of him all day at school and was worried what I would find when I got home.

At home I found him sprawled out uncomfortably in the bathroom. He would never lay on a hard floor like that. He couldn't get up and started to whine. I felt awful. Poor thing was probably scared all day. I'm sorry he's gone, but I'm glad this process is over.

I know how sad it is to lose a pet. At least he's really at rest now, he had a good life.

I am so sorry!

How is the other dog handling it?

I dread the day when our dog is gone! This is the first pet that I will bury and I didn't want to get attached, but the little thing stole my heart!

Been there more than once, and it never gets easier. You did the right thing, and gave him comfort and peace, free from pain and suffering. I hope in time, your wonderful memories will make you smile when you think of him, but for now, it stinks.

It's never easy to lose a loved pet, and I know he was your good boy. I remember when you brought your little girl home and how you described him as "put out."

I hope you take the time to grieve and celebrate his life with your family. My thoughts are with you.

It's so hard to lose a pet, but it is a relief when the suffering is over, for all of you. I don't think he was scared all day, so try not to feel badly about that. He was home, in familiar surroundings. I'll bet anything he slept the whole time you were at school, and only started to whine when he tried to get up to greet you. He trusted you to take care of him, and you did. Take care of yourself- this is a loss of a family member.

Oh, no, I am so sorry. That stinks but it sounds like he was really not in a good space anymore. Like the others have said, your family provided him with a good life and happy home.

((hugs))

So sorry for your loss. Our vet gave our dog six weeks to live (kidney failure) and that was last September. We know that day is coming soon now as she has lost a lot of weight and doesn't eat like she used to (She's a beagle. They always eat everything!). I too worry about coming home from work and finding her gone. I hope we know when it's time to take the pain away from her.

I was in college when my first dog had to be put down and it was hard. I can't imagine being the adult and having to make that decision. I worry about my three pups and how I will have the strength to help them when they most need it. I'm so sorry that you had to be the adult and do something to help your dog. I agree with the previous posters that you gave your pup exactly what was needed to keep him comfortable and that he was probably not scared all day but sleeping and waiting for you to return. It's so hard losing a pet. Hugs to you all!

It is so hard to lose a pet. But like the dog in 'The Art of Racing in the Rain' would say, he was just waiting until you were ready to let him go. Now you can remember all of the good, loving times you had with him and move past this suffering time.

My condolences to you and your family. It is hard losing a part of your family, harder still worrying about what it the right thing to do.

Quote:
Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm so sorry!

We went through this a little over two years ago with our 16 yr old mini schnauzer. I still miss her, but I know it was the right thing...she was so miserable.

I'm really sorry because I remember how terribly sad we were. My husband, son, and I all went together and cried when it happened.

I hope your other dog is doing ok.

So sorry that you have lost your dog. When we lost our 16 yr old sheltie about five years ago, it hurt so bad I said we would never get another dog. We already had a second dog, but I said when he was gone, that would be it. I meant it, but about a year later we gave in and allowed our daughter and son get a dog. Pets can be so wonderful, but it sure is hard to lose them.

I had to put my sweetie down on May 5th of last year. I've been thinking about her today. How sick and tired and hurting she was this time last year, and how letting her go was the loving decision. I have two new pups and I still miss her!

It is hard, but the right thing to do. It does get better... Really!

(((HUGS))) for Loss of Pet
Old 05-02-2013, 03:22 PM

I'm so sorry HiFi. It's usually wrong to say, "I understand", but in this case I really do. After a sudden diagnosis of oral cancer on Thursday, I 'bought time' like you did for the weekend and then put my Nicky cat to sleep on Tuesday. It was so hard and I am just missing him so much. I had two cats for about 15 years, then just him for almost two years and now no one. I can't buy carry out that has meat, come home, go to sleep, wake up or leave the house without thinking about him. But, as you described, he was in pain. Actually, he was still going up and down the stairs and jumping up onto the mending pile, but he couldn't eat and I was bottle feeding him water for those last two days. (That's actually a memory I'll treasure, he was bothered at first by that, but then would paw at the nipple [threw that term/visual in to make ya smile] or the bottle or reach at it with his mouth when I started to pull it away.) But I miss him soooooooooo. He was almost 16, but he was my sweetie-pie BABY! It's hard doing the right thing and we just hafta pray that they understand that we're going to miss them and don't wanna hurt them but just hafta spare them any more pain. Hugs, tears, and prayers for you and your family.

It is so sad to lose a pet. I am sorry for your loss. It was probably best your son was at college. We lost a cat just a few days before our younger son went to college for the first time. That was super hard.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your special buddy. Pets are a blessing. I hope the good times stay with you always.

I'm so sorry about your dog. We had to have our beloved dog put to sleep about 5 years ago. She went downhill much like your dog did and it tore me up to watch it. She was a wonderful member of our family. I will never have another dog because there will never be another one as smart and wonderful as she was. I also know I can't go through this again. It tears me up just to read about your experience.
