Pet rocks are really in this year so I am going to have them as our class pets.. here are some of the things I will be doing. I would appreciate any other thoughts you have: bulletin board titles: Reading Rocks Math Magic(make pet rock magician with wand)
Art class: each student will make their own pet rock
Writing: Write instructions for someone to make a pet rock Bring a rock home and have that person create a pet rock from their directions
Also will do writing throughout year
Reading: will do fluency practice, other reading to their pet
Math: will group rocks - odd/even skip counting write their own story problems in group about rock..
I think I could do a lot of CC with this theme...
anyway any other ideas would be appreciated

Take a Look at The Book

titled Everybody Needs a Rock by Byrd Baylor. It is a short picture book that gives about ten rules for choosing a great rock.

I read it to my students and ask that they remember the rules. Then we go on a rock hunt around the school yard.

When we return they tell why they selected that rock. We discuss how they are all rocks but each unique. Then they add their initials to their rock with a permanent marker.

Then I collect the rocks and arrange them in a shallow see through bowl. We talk about how pretty they look together. They are different textures, sizes and colors. I compare them to our class. I tell them their rock is their symbol and that they will stay in the bowl for the year as a reminder of how unique we are as individuals but how good we look altogether.

Then at the end of the year everyone gets their rock back. Also, if someone moves I return their rock.

Maybe you could do something similar with the book as well.

Rocks

One year, after a visit to Maine, I brought home rocks and wrote mt student's name on the rocks and put on their desks. My principal wa concerned but the kids loved them!

There is another great book called Rocks in His Head which I read...along with the other suggestion.

As my geologist husband would say, rocks rule!

Pet Rock

Cute ideas! Yes, the Pet Rock could easily be part of a writing curriculum. Students could write letters to their Pet Rock, they could write narratives from the rock's point of view (like adventures it had before the student and rock became friends), and students could create habitats for the rocks and write descriptions of the habitat.

I have so many questions for the rocks! For example, do they like rain? Is it refreshing or just a drag?

When the rock thing gets old, the Pet Rock could get it's own Pet Rock and describe what kind of qualities it's looking for in a friend. You could even use the Master Pet Rock (teacher's rock) to help teach the Pet Rocks about social skills and anti-bullying messages.

I can think of a lot of weighing and measuring activities, too.

That's right, you rock!

I just shoveled 1 ton of rocks around my pool and I was noticing how pretty some of them are.

I can't thank you enough for sharing! I usually teach 1st but will have a 1/2 this year so I feel like a brand new teacher looking for activities. This will fit in so well with science.
