Middle School Dances

So my kid's school announced a dance a few weeks ago. I asked my 8th grader if he wanted to go. I got "Ehh," as a response. Fast forward to last night when he suddenly and urgently wanted to skip soccer practice to go to the dance. I said, "A couple weeks ago you weren't interested and now you are? What's her name?" He laughed and said,"Katie."

When he came home, I was being super nosy (mostly to embarrass him ) and asked if he danced with Katie. He said, "Sort of." I said, "What does that mean?" and he kind of shrugged his shoulders around and said, "We stood near each other and did this." I asked if he slow danced with her and he was shocked! "Mom, we don't have slow dances! It's only the 8th grade!"

Um, when I was a kid, we started having school dances in the 6th grade and every 3rd or 4th song was a slow dance. When did this change? I was seriously surprised.

grandson went to MS dances last year he was 6th grade. I asked him what he did. And he said "I stood with my friends and we LOOKED at the girls trying to decide who we will dance with next year when we are in 7th grade" I was laughing hysterically inside.

I did some asking around. Apparently, this MS does not include any slow dances. I had no clue.

I teach 6. We have 2 dances. The first dance, the kids don't want anything to do with slow dancing. However, they loosen up for the spring dance. When slow music comes on, some do attempt to dance. Our 7th/8th grade dances are so much different. We have to pry the kids apart.

No Slow Songs Here!

We do not play slow songs at our 5th and 6th grade dances. We tried playing a few in the past and no one danced!! Honestly, the boys and girls seem to do their best to avoid each other the entire dance . They do play slow songs at the 7th and 8th grade dances.
