Darn desks...

Anyone else finding that when you go to rearrange your room, the desks get in the way? haha I am rearranging my room and want to include nice little areas for reading and things, but then trying to fit 21 desks is not working with my plans! I could make my room so spacious and comfortable if it weren't for these desks getting in the way! It is so frustrating! Can I just put them all in one big cluster in the middle of the room, regardless of whether the kids can actually get into their desks? Or maybe just leave them stacked in the middle of my room! I think the hardest part of room organizing is finding a functional way for these desks to fit...

I'm going to have 32 on my roster and have to keep 3-4 more desks available for the Special Day Class students who push in for 2 hours a day. There aren't too many room arrangements I can do with that many desks. I'm such a clumsy gal, I always come home with bruises on my legs from bumping in to the desks and chairs! The only ways I've been able to do it is the E and reverse E, and three long groups of 12! Plus, 5th graders' desks are bigger and chairs are bigger! I walk in to primary classrooms and get so jealous about all the open space.

I always think the desks get in the way, too!

Yet, many of the books say to organize those last, so you're doing the right thing!

I teach first grade and will have 33+ and I have no idea how to arrange the room. I don't have a teacher desk and I'm thinking about getting rid of the kidney table. I love having a carpet area, but don't see how I'll have room.

about the desks. I like my room so much better when the desks are pulled out for floor cleaning at the end of the year . I think I may buy Japanese tea tables and everyone can sit on floor! How do you think Open House would go ?

I'll have 23 this year and I group my desks in 4's so they can do group work for sci. and cooperative learning, but then I can't arrange other things the way I'd prefer! Plus I have 26 desks total, so there will be 3 other desks floating around. At my school you don't give up your extra desks or if you get a new student you may not get anything to match.

One year I had 19 students and thought it was heaven. That year I did send about 4 desks out to the warehouse, but they were my old ones, not the new ones I got a couple of years ago.

Good luck arranging!

I have the same problem with 26 desk. I have the desk with chair attached so they take up more room. Here is a picture of my desk.

unmatched, uneven desks. They slant and it is hard to match them up in a grouping. I feel your pain!

Haha...I am so happy to see that I'm not the only person who likes it best when the desks are stacked up when the floor is being waxed. Things look great and there is lots of room until you add the desks, then your space gets that much smaller. Then you toss in the children and there is no room left at all. I had 17 students last year and found I just had enough room to get around then. I will have 24 Grade 5 students in September and I'm anxious about the desk situation already. I have the added issue that I have a smartboard on one wall and my whiteboard on the other so I kinda need the students on an angle in the room. I always say I'll stick a few desks and children in the hall to make for more space...haha!!

It is not just an elementary thing though. Middle school too. I am always at a loss as to how to arrange the desks. They are all one piece so you can't put them next to each other. Plus some slant more than others. I like to be able to move between desks and not have students more than three desks deep. I usually end up having five rows of three on one side of the room facing the other five rows of three on the other side. Feels less congested, but I am tired of that arrangement. What to do?

I feel your pain! I'll have around 30 this year. Last year was 27, and we were bursting at the seams! I am always a bit envious of the room that have areas for a carpet and comfy gathering areas for the kids. The only place I can gather with the kids is round table that can maybe seat 5. Sure makes it challenging to meet with the kids and design inviting spaces!

Last year I had first grade with 21 students. They gave me a colored square rug that had 30 squares! needless to say it was huge. I wanted it in front of my calendar area, but did want students desks on the rug so I did a side row where the front of the room was to the students' left, then put forward rows comeing out of the side row. I cant post attachments but her is the best diagram I can make:

Front of the room
l - - - -
l - - - -
l - - -
l - - -
l - -

The five students on the left faced the side of the room, but could still see the board, then I had rows of 4, 4, 3, 3, and 2 facing forward.

Yep, that's right. I had 35 students with desks in my room last year. Oh, and they were all 6th grade girls! The best arrangement i was able to do was 6 groups of 6. With 3 groups in front and 3 in the back.

There was little room elsewhere in the room. We had to make room for a bookshelf to house all the extra books that wouldn't fit in their desk.

It was sooo crowded when I had to put them in rows for Standardized testing. I was bumping my behind on all their desks!!!!

I am glad others feel my pain! I finally put them in six rows tonight and I am going to sleep on it for a while before I go back in and try to rearrange! The annoying thing is that they are all different heights so I hate how they look pressed up against other desks. It is so frustrating.
