If they only would have worked as hard to...

...learn the material as they did to cheat. I have two girls who had a brilliant plan. Their final Constitution test was on the Bill of Rights and other amendments. It was 30 questions long. I gave them a practice test/quiz/study guide in class and we corrected it in class. The format was multiple choice, but in sections with four or 4 or 5 choices of amendments or vocabulary words. There were only 15 amendments and then some vocabulary and citizenship questions to make the 30 questions. I told them that the test format was exactly the same. The word banks were the same. BUT, the questions were in different order. That way, they could study each section separately until they had the information down cold. WELL, two girls decided to memorize the answers...the multiple choice abc answers. From the practice test/quiz. They both failed miserably and will retake tomorrow. They, along with a few other classmates were taken out of class with the ELL teacher. A couple of those students are no longer in ELL, but can go to small groups for assessments. The ELL teacher first told me about this, and then the ELL aide told me. Neither girl believes she cheated. Both are threatening to go to their parents. Too bad, so sad..... Anyway, it was an interesting day. The best part is that the student who speaks nearly NO English and takes assessments in Spanish got 100% on HIS test AND he ratted out the girls too. I love that boy! Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Just in case they decide to memorize the questions from the tests that they took home to correct and study from.

How nice to give them another chance- sounds like they failed, pure and simple! I don't know that it's cheating, per se, but it's certainly an ineffective way to try to get a good grade!

Should be interesting to hear whta happens next!

I don't see that as cheating. I do see it as not smart since they didn't notice the order wasn't the same. It is nice of you to let them retake it though.

1. State of Illinois requires students to pass the Constitution test before they go to high school.
2. Our students must earn 70% or more on summative assessments.

They are for the amendments. I know they won't work for this year but let me know if you would like to see them.

It doesn't sound like cheating. And it sounds like you actually encouraged them not to learn the material.

This was after spending 3 weeks studying the topic. They had lots of differentiated instruction and should have known the facts by heart. This was just me introducing them to the format of the test, which was unfamiliar. I used the information from this part of the test as study material. I was NOT remiss in my instruction. Seriously? That just burns my butt to have people think that this was the only instruction they had on the topic and that I encouraged them to do this.
