Interview Questions SPED?

I can find tons of questions that principals might ask a general education teacher but can you tell me questions I should be prepared to answer for a special education position? And if you want to put some input on how to answer the questions below, that is always helpful too

So far I have thought of...
-How do you decide what and how to teach students with IEP?
-How do you keep track of students' goals?
-How would you handle a student who isn't learning no matter what you tried?
-What are the steps for making an individual behavior plan?
-How do you use data to plan instruction?
-How do you handle an angry parent or reluctant to participate parent?
-How do you motivate students who don't want to work?

Thank you SO much for your help!!

I have been on a few panels and we also ask...
  • How would you collaborate with different specialists (i.e., SLP, OT, school psych, behaviorist)?
  • What experience do you have with assessment?
  • How would you utilize your paraprofessionals?

On some behavior questions too.

1. How do you deal with disruptive students?
2. When is it acceptable to restrain/seclude a student?
3. How would you react if a student hit, kicked, or bit you?
4. How would you react if a student hit, kicked, or bit another student?
5. What systems do you have in place to prevent student misbehavior?
6. What do you see as the role of a para? How have or will you use your para to support student learning?

This is a great list of questions from everyone! Many that I would expect/have asked in an interview are already listed. I would also be prepared to talk about HOW you track data towards an IEP goal (what kind of data, how frequently you take it, how you document). If the position is resource or self-contained, they might ask about how you set up a classroom- especially if kids cycle in and out. If the class is an inclusion/co-teaching model, I'd be prepared to discuss collaboration with the gen Ed teacher and how you see duties being shared, etc. This might be out there, but I've also seen people ask about someone's philosophy of special education/what the applicants sees as the goal of special education.

Be prepared to talk about the disabilities with which you've worked. If the position is for a speciality classroom, you'll probably already be prepared for that (especially if a self-contained that is geared towards a particular disability category, e.g., autism or emotional disabilities), but for a resource setting, you may have quite a diverse range and they might want to know where you might need more support. Speaking of support, also be ready to talk about what, if any, support you feel you need.

Also, along the lines of parents, you might get asked how you involve parents in the classroom. Also, what experience you have with a wide range of grade level material/subjects.

Good luck!!

How will you handle a gen. ed. teacher who is not following the IEP?

Here are two that I recalled and thought were not expected.

How would you approach a gen ed teacher who was over accommodating for a student?

How would you handle a parent who thought the IEP was not addressing students needs?
