My boys are turning 6 this month. We are planning a carnival party for friends from school. Would it be terrible to ask them to donate $5 toward a zoo pass instead of buying a gift?

I would just say "no presents."

I could see people getting hacked off at that. I'd give the zoo membership as a family gift instead.

I wouldn't direct people's giving at all.

If you're close enough with extended family and have the relationship, maybe the zoo pass could come from them.

Yes tacky in my opinion. Say no gifts if you donít want a bunch of toys. Make the zoo pass a present from you to them.

Itís a thing in some places/circles. Weíve never been invited to one but I would appreciate it (only spending $5 + card) but Iím not brave enough to throw one.

Oh as a lazy mom, I would love the ease of just sticking a 5 in a card. But I am weird like that.

Hmmm...
That article was interesting. I had never heard of a Fiver party. I know it is a little tacky, but I may try it.

I know when my kids are invited to parties I always feel a little weird because I don't know the kid or what s/he would want. I usually spend $15-20ish, but it is getting hard to find gifts around $15 that "show up".

I think it is a good idea. As a parent I would rather get one nice gift than 10 pieces of "stuff" I would end up giving away, throwing away, or losing under a piece of furniture. As a parent with a child going to a party, I think I would be happy to have that guidance, too. What a relief!

Will your boys will be happy with this? It seems like they would be the ones to miss out on the presents For the zoo pass, maybe ask family members to do that.
