I had someone make a sort of suggestive statement that a funny sign I put in my room is not appropriate or somehow sends a bad message. I am perplexed. I thought it was funny and harmless and obviously ironic. Thoughts

But it will most likely come across to some as snarky.

I try to keep sarcasm out of my classroom.

But that's why I went into teaching, too!

I have a cup that someone got me with the same saying. My 5th graders loved it! They thought it was funny.

I think it's funny and sarcastic but I personally would not put it in the classroom.

I like it, but I personally wouldn't hang it because I wouldn't want to deal with nonsense from overly sensitive types. You know they're out there. I've had several parents complain to me that the teachers at their last school "were just in it for the paycheck." . BTW, my response to that is always, "Well, they must have been pretty disappointed then!"

It's not "ironic", as you thought, but *sarcastic*, and that's what makes it inappropriate.

I guess it depends how you take it? I took it to mean that it would be the opposite of what you expect if that is what you go into it expecting.

Teaching is hard work, little pay and often little to no accolades. If you expect more you are going to be disappointed.

Even though I suspect most of us would agree that teachers don't make as much money as we should, I know I make more than many of the parents at my school. For that reason I would be concerned about offending someone. I would not put it in my classroom.

I actually work in an upper middle class neighborhood far outside of what I could afford. If I were in a title 1 school I obviously see where is could be offensive. This is a valid point. My class last year had exactly zero free lunches. My school is actually referred to with a nickname that espouses privilege I removed it since I realized it was big give away to anyone in my district. (edited to add-I just looked up the median home price for a 3 bedroom 2 bath home in area around my school its 650,000 so we are def. not low income)

I guess I just dont get where the offense is at exploring the idea that if you came into the field for decent money and accolades you are in the wrong place. Teachers work hard and we do it despite the lack of money and fame. Ok better money would be appreciated, but any illusion that money and accolades are part of the job have been dispelled. A little verbal irony that doesnt make fun of anyone seems harmless to me. Maybe I am dense?

I agree with other posters that, while funny to those in the know, it comes across as sarcastic and negative.

I have some funny-to-me cartoons and sayings that I put on the inside of a cupboard door for my own and trusted friends' enjoyment.

That does not have a place in the classroom.

Well I guess even though I don’t get it there is some people who would find it negative. I don’t plan to take it down as it sits on my teacher desk in a corner next to my zombie head coffee mug -that someone else told me might be inappropriate for elementary school and my Hawkins AV Club alumni pencil holder that someone else told me wasn’t work appropriate. Perhaps I just have a weird sense of humor.

I love it, but I wouldnít put it up in the classroom. In my school, it would be on the back of the staff room toilet door along with all those other things we canít put up in public.

I'm in the "I think it's funny" camp.
