Skunks & Coffee
Old 08-07-2020, 08:51 PM

We have skunks that pass through the yard on a regular basis. They wander through in early mornings, usually the 3 to 5 am period.

DH makes regular black coffee about 6am.

They smell the same. Coffee. Skunk. Who knows?

One of my coworkers also thinks coffee and skunk are hard to distinguish.

Anyone else, or are we the only weird ones?

Depends on the brand of coffee. Community - French Vanilla or Pecan Praline don't smell like skunk to me. Store brand dark roast does.

They smell the same as long as the skunk scent is faint. When itís strong, itís not.

I must use a better brand of coffee...

But I think cannabis smells like skunk! Sometimes I go into my garage and wonder if someone has been sneaking in there to have a smoke...but actually it is probably the skunk who lives in the woods out back, and likes my compost pile.

Really?! I have never made that connection/observation.

I have had beer that tastes “skunky”, though. And I like a good bottle of beer!

Texas K-girl, I can't function without at least 2 cups of coffee every morning. I often have a cup in the afternoon too. I am just particular about the brand and flavor.

Do you remember when Avon's Skin So Soft was popular? I couldn't stand the aroma of the stuff. Smelled like Comet cleanser to me.

I love coffee. I donít think I ever saw or went near a skunk. If they smell like coffee with chicory, I may change my mind.

Iím so glad you wrote this! I donít drink coffee and when I tell people I donít like the smell, they act like Iím crazy and missing one of lifeís great joys. From now on Iíll say, ďI dislike the smell of coffee. Some people think it smells like skunk.Ē

Coffee

Our coffee pot will make a skunky smell when it needs a good cleaning. I love the smell of fresh brewed coffee, can't stand the taste unless it is in a cappuccino or creamy caramel iced coffee. It must be more that 70% sugar and creamy.

I love coffee. I thought the smell connection was just me! I donít smell any connection with skunk and marijuana. Now roasting green chilies, that smells like marijuana!

Coffee doesn't smell like skunk to me. I wonder if it's a genetic thing, like why some people (me!) think cilantro tastes like soap.

Skunk doesn't smell like marijuana to me, either, although apparently some varieties of weed smell like uncleaned litter box to me.

Skunks and coffee

I never noticed that connection, BUT, before I started drinking coffee in my late 20ís, I always thought it smelled like tuna fish.

And cannabis actually truly can smell like skunk.

I don't like coffee, but I usually really like the smell of it (one of the few edible things that I like the smell of, but not the taste). Coffee does not smell like skunk to me.
Pot does. The last few years when we are walking some where, and I'll say something about a skunk, my kids will laugh. They thought I was just being silly, but I didn't know pot smelled like skunk. I don't think pot smelled like skunk in the '70s.

I love coffee and am very particular about what coffee I buy, and I have never noticed it smelling like skunk. I do think that pot sometimes smells like skunk.

I think Tori is on to something with the similarity of how cilantro tastes bad for some people (thankfully not me).

Also, there was a whole chapter about the sense of smell in Bill Bryson's book The Body and I remember it being fascinating in that smell is perception just as sight is and that our brain is processing sights and smells and how we perceive them is intensely personal. *He said it much more eloquently than I did; anyway I highly recommend it.

Roast beef?
Old 08-08-2020, 10:34 AM

DH would order coffee beans from Ethiopia. He would then roast and grind the beans. When he brewed the coffee with would smell and taste like overcooked roast beef. Not very appetizing but he loved it and failed to notice the roast beef flavor. I enjoy Dunkin Donuts coffee pods. Different strokes for different folks.

I love coffee and the smell of a fresh-brewed pot. I never thought it smelled like skunk. Iíll have to think about that tomorrow when we make some coffee.

What I did make a connection with skunk odor is the aroma of toasted sesame oil. I love sesame oil and noticed the faint smell of skunk spray was similar! Note I said FAINT skunk spray. My dog once got skunked and I smelled skunk odor freshly sprayed and up close. No, I did not think of sesame oil at that time! Lol.

I agree. I have always thought they smell the same. Of course, the coffee drinkers I know do not think so.
