Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello
I am looking for good read alouds for visualizing. I know at one time I saw on here an activity where you read a book and it gave descriptions of a charter. Students had to draw what they thought the character looked like. Any of you have the activity or know where I can find it?
Thanks In Advance for all the help!

Go to this site and click on visualizing. There is a very complete list.

Another thing I have done is take a short descriptive story from a children's magazine. This is very likely something your students will have not seen or read.

Break the story into parts, and type it. If you want, make a book out of it on 8 1/2" x 14" paper. Leave space on each page so students can draw a picture...as if they were the illustrator of the story.

When they talk about their completed illustrations in small groups or with a partner, they have to discuss what is in their illustration and why it is there.

Here are some sites that might help you.

A few ideas we have done:
Played nature sounds and have the kids visualize pictures in their mind, and then sketch them.
Use cotton balls with smells on them such as sunscreen, and have the kids describe what pops into their minds.
Read three different winter poems and ask the kids to visualize all of them and then illustrate the one they had the strongest image with.
And lots and lots of practice with picture books and sharing their images with a partner on the carpet. Hope that helps!

I second the music. My kids liked it the best. I also did read alouds and poems. They beg for more music. I've done thunderstorms and beach type music with good results. They listen and draw their most vivid image.
