Hi there! I am here to pick your amazing and creative brains! Our school is having a holiday door decorating contest.... I have never decorated my classroom door, or seen any other's do it. I was wondering, what is your best idea you have seen or done for decorating a door for the holiday season??? I would love to hear your answers! Thank you so much

This is the first for me too! I first thought up doing somehting with elves. Now I'm thinking of doing something with the Grinch. Still not sure how to go about either. I saw a really cute one with reindeer on Pintrest.

Holiday Books

Clip to ScrapBook #3

You could always read a holiday story to the class and do your door from that. One year, we did a door decorating contest for Read Across America. We chose Arthur as our favorite character. We used bulletin board paper for the background. Then I used my projector to trace a big Arthur. The students colored him and we put him on the door with some quote about reading. You could always read a holiday book and use it as inspiration. Or you could brainstorm as a class your favorite story characters and make a big picture of the character on the door. Then you can have them write a holiday story or poem about the character.

Whenever we have to do extra stuff like that, I always try to tie it into the standards somehow. Unfortunately, there is too much to do and not enough time, so I just try to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Good luck :-)

Another idea is to use a bookmark for inspiration, especially ones that go vertically. Makes enlarging items a breeze.

12 days of Christmas

Not sure...dreamed about it...
On the first day of Christmas my student gave to me ( One dry eraser) On the second day of Christmas my students gave to me ( Two pencil sharpeners) etc.
I would then decorate my door with black and white photos of the students and the item they were giving me.
I would place the pictures on some cute frame or something....Make it very Holidayish...At the end I would have a group photo
Just thinking outloud

Twas the Night Before Christmas
Old 12-07-2011, 09:02 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #6

For my door one year I did "Twas the Night Before Christmas." I covered the door with dark blue. Then I put a black silhouette of a school on there. I made a silhouette of Santa and the reindeer going over the school. I made however many windows as there are students. Then I took pictures of them "sleeping." I put one in each window. Then I added decorations. I found a miniature string of lights and I added snowflakes. For the finishing touch, I put my own lyrics to Twas the Night Before Christmas on clouds. Here is an excerpt:
Twas the night before Christmas and all through the school
The children were following every single rule
I forget the next line
While visions of winter break danced in their heads
I can look up the rest if you want. If you are interested I also have a picture of the finished product! Good Luck!
Another Idea: Another door was changed into a Gingerbread house which was really cool!!!!

Hi! I love your door decorating idea. Do you remember the rest of the lyrics to your poem? and do you still have a picture? I am looking for some ideas for an upcoming door decorating contest.

Twas the Night Before Christmas Lyrics

Clip to ScrapBook #9

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the school
The children were trying to obey every single rule
Studying hard, good grades they bear.
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there
The third graders were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of winter break danced in their heads

I will post a picture soon. I don't have the digital file, so I need to scan it in!

Make strings of lights using a Christmas light template--one light bulb for each letter in the child's name. Cut out the colored bulbs and attach to black yarn creating a string of lights.

Cover your door with white paper. Make a large green Christmas tree with with green paper and blue onto the white. Attach the strings of paper lights.
