Candy Cane Writing

My students love writing, "How to Eat a Candy Cane." Of course, we have to eat candy canes to understand the process. I have the students use a sequential graphic organizer to record the steps. The students use the graphic organizers to write the "how to" story. The students publish their story on special paper with a peppermint striped border. Fun!

Well, if it isn't an issue for you to specifically write about Christmas . . .

My class writes persuasive letters to Santa. They are required to ask for one thing for themselves and tell why they want it (at least 2 reasons), one thing for their family (and 2 reasons) and one thing for our whole community (and 2 reasons).

Usually they can come up with ideas of what they want, but the reasons are a challenge. It just goes to show them that some of their 'wants' aren't very well thought out.

I tell them ahead of time we're not really going to send these to Santa, it's just a fun way to write a persuasive piece. Of course, you could send them if you wanted to . . . :-)

Respond to Letters to Santa
Old 11-30-2011, 05:29 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #4

In my building, the kindergarteners write letters to Santa. They dictate these letters to the fourth graders.

Then the fourth graders write back as if they are Santa, Mrs. Clause, or one of the elves. The fourth grade teacher makes a special envelope, postmarked the North Pole.

Finally, these letters are delivered by a very excited school secretary to the kindergarten classes, and the secretary makes believe they have been delivered from the North Pole too.

The kindergarteners love this!!

This is perfect for my class! I have a large amount of students that don't celebrate Christmas, so I have to keep it "winter themed". I know the grade level does a winter scene and story, but I LOVE that this hits on how-to writing, and sequence. Thanks so much for sharing

The Best Gift in the World

They describe the gift they would give their family if they could give them anything. They can not name the item though. Then they read the description aloud to the class and the students try to guess what the gift is.

are just finishing up "the senses of winter". They wrote a descriptive sentence about: Winter smells like, winter tastes like, winter looks like, winter sounds like, and winter feels like.
We have been talking about adjectives so my kids were encouraged to really be descriptive. They turned out awesome!! I also told my kids that the "winter feels like" can be what they actually touch or something in their heart. They are writing each sentence on a separate page with a picture to go with and then we are going to create a cover and bind them.
I am going to display them and then the kids will be able to take them home after the holiday break. I have loved reading them!

I just sent this home today. The students pick one, work on it at home, then I give them some class time toward the end of the due date.

We do an "Angel" writing project. They write about times when they were angels/did something nice for someone. We also write "Reindeer Resignation" letters to Santa after our Friendly Letter unit.
