Roll call!

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I see that there are many new to 6th grade teachers here. This board has not always been the most active, but if it starts being busier, I will check in more often (I am usually in the Lounge!)

Why don't we do a roll call and get to know each other a little?

Years teaching:
Years teaching 6th:
Departmentalized or self-contained:
If departmentalized, what subject(s) do you teach?
State:
Previous experience:

Years teaching: Entering my 6th year
Years teaching 6th: Entering my 3rd, but not consecutively
Departmentalized or self-contained: Departmentalized
If departmentalized, what subject(s) do you teach? Math
State:PA
Previous experience: I've taught math in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. My first two years, I taught 6th grade math and 8th grade Pre-Algebra in a middle school building. The past three years I taught 7th grade math in the same middle school. Now, due to budget cuts, I am headed back to teach 6th grade math in the brand new school in the district, which houses grades 4-6.

I am looking forward to starting fresh this year, and I am excited to be back with the 6th graders...they are my favorite of the grades I've taught so far! I am looking forward to finding some great ideas on this teacher forum, as I am new to ProTeacher!

Previous experience: 2nd career teacher...spent 13 years in radio/tv broadcasting, retail mgmt, and public relations. My first teaching year was at my dream grade level, 4th grade! I happened into a middle school social studies position as a long-term substitute, and I've been in MS/JH ever since. I've also taught at community colleges. I love MS/JH because I enjoy sponsoring clubs (student council, NJHS, scholastic bowl, speech team, and yearbook)!

It was fun to read everyone's experiences. Thanks for the activity!

Years teaching: This upcoming year will be my 8th year.
Years teaching 6th: This will be my third year. But not consecutively.
Departmentalized or self-contained: In Ontario, we don't use these terms. In most elementary schools, teachers teach their classes most subjects. So I guess that means self-contained?
If departmentalized, what subject(s) do you teach? I will teach all subjects except for French and the Arts.
State: Province = Ontario
Previous experience: I have also taught grades 5 and 7.

Why don't we do a roll call and get to know each other a little?

Years teaching: 33

If departmentalized, what subject(s) do you teach? Science/Social Studies/Reading/Language
State: Alabama
Previous experience Reading Title 1 first and second grade, 3,4,5,6, everything, 7, 8, math.

I tend to teach more like an elementary teacher than a middle school teacher. More hands-on projects, group work, cooperative learning, than lecture.

Hey Mrs. B from NC...

Our school is just making the transition to have 6th grade in the middle school this year. Our 6th graders have been part of the elementary in past years. I was asked to move up to help 6th graders (and veteran staff ) adjust to the transition. It's definitely a change in our extremely small district, but a change for the better!! Do you hear any talk of moving your 6th graders up?

I never knew there were this many 6th grade teachers on PT!

Years teaching: This year will be my 26th year! Wow.

Years teaching 6th: This will be my 7th year.

Departmentalized or self-contained: Departmentalized

If departmentalized, what subject(s) do you teach? English: reading, writing, listening, speaking. We use a Workshop approach.

State: NJ (Like Tammy, I live in NY, teach in Jersey.)

Previous experience: After college, I started teaching 2nd grade in a Catholic School in Manhattan for two years. Then I moved to a Public School in the Bronx and taught 5th grade for 8 years. Through that job, I met a principal who worked in NJ, and he offered me a job. I have been in that district ever since. I started teaching 4th grade, then moved to 3rd, then to 5th, where I stayed until I moved to a middle school in the same district to teach 6th grade English. I liked teaching elementary school, but I really like teaching at the middle school level.
