Share one fun fact about you.
(I have to come up with one for our workdays and I can't think of a thing. I'm so boring. Maybe yours will spark one for me.)

Just one?

I rode on an elephant with two of my students (plus another child) on a field trip.

I carry two different passports because I was born in Engalnd to American parents not working for the military. Because I have it, DD does too (but her kids won't unless she moves abroad herself). That means either of us can work in the US or England without having to deal with work papers.

I've been questioned about suspected drug/gun running by police. I didn't do either but it is a great party story!

I marched in a Scottish Drum and Bugle Corps in high school. We wore authentic Scottish kilts.. Great fun!

My husband's family were guests on "I've Got a Secret" with Gary Moore back in about 1960.

I patted a rhinoceros on the horn when I was 7. It was at the zoo and the zookeeper let us in to the enclosure.

I was born during a very short period of time in U.S. history when there were 49 states! Hawaii became a state 6 months after I was born.

I once set off an alarm in the Smithsonian Museum of American History and had an armed guard pointing a gun at me. I was only 5 at the time, and didn't realize I wasn't supposed to sit on George Washington's chair. My family has never let me live that down!

When I was in grad school, a friend and I had part-time jobs milking pigs.
We went to a school with a strong ag program. They were doing transgenic research and the nursing mama pigs needed to be milked so the piglets could be fed breastmilk.

26.2 miles
Old 08-04-2017, 02:15 AM
  #23

In 2005, I participated in and completed the Los Angeles Marathon! I trained myself by walking around my neighborhood daily for a few months. I had never even done a marathon or a walk; I had only watched it on television. I was so inspired by the interviews with participants the year before who had what some would consider serious obstacles that could've prevented them from being able to complete such a task; their determination motivated me, and I walked in the next one. I am sure that no one expected me to do it, let alone finish because of my size and inexperience, but ten hours later from the start, I was holding my completion medal and recovering from the day's events. It was only the Lord that gave me strength.

I remember reading encouraging signs along the way, one of which said: It isn't the 26 miles that gets you; it's the .2 - truer words have never been written🤓

Bottom Line: let nothing stop you from doing something you would like to do. Go for it!

I worked for a library collection agency. Just like the Seinfeld episode, except we wouldn't threaten people. We'd call about delinquent late fees, majorly overdue books, etc... It was a fun job.

I'm an identical twin and she is my best friend ever! We have always been close. These days we don't look alike. Due to health problems on her side, she is down to 110 lbs and looks amazing and I'm way over that. (but wouldn't want to get there the way she did) I love my twin sister

When I was 10, my mom and I got locked into the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. I don't know how it happened, but it was quite scary. All the exhibits like films were still playing. We were on the second floor I think and couldn't get downstairs because all the escalators had metal covers on them. A security guard finally came by and asked us what we were doing. Our response, "Trying to get out!"

The Kool Aide man came to my neighborhood in the '70s because our family won a Schwinn bike by collecting the labels on the back of Kool Aide envelopes. It's still in the basement of my parent's house.

I sold perfume to Shirley MacLaine. It was in the store my grandmother ran in Nassau, Bahamas. She was extremely nice and very funny! (and who knew she had that many freckles??)

Almost everyone on this site knows that MrsD5 and I are identical twins, which is fun when we are traveling together. We got a lot of stares and questions.

However, my fun fact (not so fun for me then) is that I was electrocuted when I was 2 1/2 after I put the charging end of a razor cord in my mouth when the other end was plugged into the wall. My dad had to break down the bathroom door to get me. He did mouth to mouth to bring me back to life. I ended up with a hole in my tongue (I now have a flap in that area) and an are of my upper lip that doesn't take lipstick too well.

Once when I was younger I got pulled over...and more to this story.

Background - I had just moved from a town in CA where a murderer had been pulling over women by putting a flashing red light in his grill.

One day I was young and driving a porsche down a busy street. A beat up old car with long haired guys started tailgating me with a flashing red light in the grill. I sped up because I was scared and they sped up too. We were driving way too fast and then all of a sudden I was surrounded by marked police cars at which I stopped and received an ugly citation. The long haired guys were under cover police who IMHO were harrassing a young woman in a porsche. Whaaat?

I recorded everything and took it to court. The judge listened to my full story and then declared.."In the interest of justice I dismiss this case".

Conclusion - I highly respect police but these two were wrong. Oops! They messed with a teacher in a porsche and I doubt they ever did it again.

In college I helped my dorm team win the human pyramid competition three years in a row. I was always the last person up, the tippy top of the pyramid, in spite of my protests that someone else should do it. I'm in a photo in the yearbook at the top of the pyramid during one of those years.

In my senior year, we were second by a fraction of a second, because my left foot slipped on its final step from the top. I let my team down.
