Anyone else super awkward on the phone?

We're starting distance learning and we're supposed to contact all our parent this week just to say hi, confirm info, etc.

Guys, I am so so so so awkward on the phone. I feel like parents might already be forming a bad impression. I start off okay, then it just goes downhill. I've always had phone anxiety so this is my worst nightmare.

Can anyone relate? I've even written a script and it kinda helps but I have foot in mouth syndrome. I promise I'm not like this with the kids

I feel the same. I HATE talking on the phone. I'm such not a "small-talk" person. I get to the point and that's it. I'm a shy person, as it is. I feel you!

I sometimes have to practice the conversation before I call! haha

So. Bad.

Iíve never been a phone chat kind of person. When I had to call families in the spring, it was awful. I had to write down what I needed to say just to get through it.

I can't even make a phone call with my husband in the room. I am terribly nervous about speaking on the phone. I don't know why. I have to psych myself up to pick up the phone and call. You are not alone.

I hate phone calls too! Do you have a friend or family member you could do a mock/practice phone call with?

I wish I had advice for you, but I don't. Just know I'm the same way. I HATE talking on the phone. Often, when my phone rings, I dread answering it and sometimes even avoid it. I'm also the same way when making call. My stomach does flip flops while it rings and I pray no one answers and I can just leave a voice mail, which I hate equally as much, but at least I don't have to worry about both sides of the conversation.

I find Iím better talking over zoom, than I am over the phone. I have come to realize that I gather a lot of data by looking at the person. I read body language.

My other Ďproblemí is that I think of my sentences. I pause while sharing my information as I search for the right word to use. The other person thinks Iím done. So they jump in. I have not figured out a way to stop this on the phone. If people can see me, they can see my expression and know Iím not done.

I thought I was the only one! It is SO MUCH EASIER to talk to a classroom full of students than it is to talk on the phone and I have no idea why that is.

We did remote learning in my district from March to the start of June (we go until end of June, but they moved into partially in-person learning then). It got a bit better as time went on, but there were definitely some moments that were like, well that wasn't the right word but here we are I guess.

A script is a bit hard to follow, but maybe just have a point form list of the topics you wanted to touch upon. Also don't feel obligated to have all the answers for the questions they have - offer follow up emails with answers so you aren't on the spot.

Best of luck!
