Does anyone have a list or poster of Good Reader Strategies that they can share?

Thanks!

What Good Readers Do...

I really like what c.acsully posted... I, too, have a list of research proven strategies, which can be found online... I will refer to these lists for modeling and identification opportunities.

An excellent site that has posters to download:

http://reading.ecb.org/teacher/downloads.html

HOWEVER, I do think the best way to generate a list is from the students themselves! Each year, I have the students work in groups to create a bubble poster of what good readers do...they each have a different color marker and write their ideas (and initial them). As I monitor the activity, I notice the children seem to naturally discuss their ideas with each other. This gives the more reserved children the comfort level needed to participate.

The kids share out when they're finished (of course, I'm just gushing over all their wonderful insights!), and they're excited to read their ideas!

Then, I tell the children that I will pull all their ideas together and make a class poster on chart paper. The next day, I make a big deal of the chart paper that has their ideas on it. I stand on a chair so that it can be "unrolled" to the floor.

It is so exciting for them to see their ideas printed out.... I will combine similar/same strategies and write them as one sentence with all the names of the contributors. Example:

Good Readers...
  • Make a picture in their mind! Suri
  • Reread what they don't understand! Kala, Mark, Jose
  • Sound out words they don't know! Molena, Carmen
  • Make predictions! Mariah, Jason
etc......

Of course, the list we make as a class is not complete. Throughout the year, we add as students discover more strategies. This poster is also very useful for reading conferences as students set goals for themselves.

The same type of activity is done for What Good Writers Do...

Have fun!
