Short Story-Having thoughts while reading

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am looking for some short stories- for upper elementary 4th/5th grade-for my students to practice having thoughts and making post-its while reading. I don't want them to use their independent reading books because I do not know all of the books and hate not being able to monitor if they are completing the task.

I am looking for stories that are not TOO challenging for them, but allow them to make deeper thoughts such as inferences, thinking about writers craft or authors purpose. Maybe even thinking why a character did something or reacted a certain way.

Any suggestions of stories I can find online or ones you may have saved I can take a look at.

Would love any suggestions. Thanks!

I did that activity with a short story from Langston Hughes. I can't remember the title. It was whole group and we stopped at per designated places that I had already determined. Students had a paper to cover the remaining text, so they couldn't 't look ahead.
