Anyone here teach Read 180? I am a middle/high school reading specialist and I'm using Read 180 this year. I'd love to just talk with other teachers using it.

I am a mother of a Read 180 student and I'd love to get some information on it.....haven't been able to get much from home room teacher and that teacher hasn't been too available to answer my questions.

because this is way beyond the call of duty. However, this site will give you lots of info. The classroom pics at #4 are amazing. I am a former Read 180 teacher, and my room didn't come close to this. But I loved looking at it.

I'd like to hear your verdict on read180. Is it legit? More of the same old Reading Recovery?
I went to the website; there's such a barrage of items. Hard to know what they are selling.

I'd appreciate any feedback.

Read180 vs. Lead 21

I would like to understand the pros and cons, student interest level, and opinions of implementation on the Read180 and the Lead 21 reading programs. Are either programs normed for evidence-based progress monitoring?

Thank you!

My "verdict"

The website I cited is not selling anything. It is one teacherís impressive record of how she implemented Read 180. Her site highlights one variable in the use of ANY program, namely, the commitment, creativity and expertise of the teacher using it. Find publisher's info at Scholastic.com.

Iím not a good barometer for Read 180ís legitimacy, because our school had an early edition of the program. The students who were only one or two years below grade level loved it and generally benefitted from it (although I donít have data). The newer edition has a much more comprehensive framework even though it still uses the programís three main tools--computer word work with in context vocabulary and comprehension, leveled independent reading, and small group instruction which addresses all 5 reading components. Itís a winning combination. Research submitted to the Florida Center for Reading Research and the What Works Clearinghouse has shown generally positive indicators of its efficacy although not definitive. FCRR AND WWC research standards are very high.

That being said, my verdict on the Read 180 program is that Scholastic has provided a framework and useful materials. If by legit you mean ďdoes it work?Ē-- it works if you work it. Implementing it is not easy, but all the necessary components of an effective reading program are there.
