I am new to fourth grade and their social studies is about the state of North Carolina...those of you who teach fourth grade in the state of NC, do you have suggestions or resources that you're willing to share? Thank you for all of your help

I teach 1st, so I'm no help with your teaching. But I wanted to welcome you to PT.

Glad to have you aboard!

I will be teaching Social Studies this coming year. If I'm lucky, I might be able to teach it two days. Our pacing guide is a joke and really doesn't give any direction. I'm hoping someone else will respond.

Welcome to 4th ! Not in NC, but I'll put a plug in for using Studies Weekly as your social studies "text". Check it out online and see if it correlates to your standards. Our Ohio Studies Weekly is absolutely excellent.

I looked at my pacing guide and was really disappointed too. The social studies was the only part of moving to fourth grade that I wasn't excited about.

I checked out and ordered the NC 4th grade studiesweekly. We don't have a social studies text and this seemed like a great option. Thank you for sharing.

i agree with the posters using social studies weekly. I usually add projects throughout the year, such as Native American research, creating dioramas of the three regions, and the NC lighthouses.

I've used Studies Weekly before, and wish I had the money to order them again. But assuming you'd still have to have a plan. So what plan do you have if this is all you will use? TIA

My plan...

I don't have much of a plan. I plan on integrating a lot of my social studies into ELA and my county has a program called CMAPP and there are integrated lessons. I will use some of the reading in small group. I think projects are the way to go and integrating them into other content areas will give me more bang for my buck. This is my plan thus far. Its not much but its a start.

Ss

I have taught NC SS for a while now. Projects are certainly the way to go. Some we do: cookie map test, mock archaeological find, a Native American museum, Colonial Crafts / Games, Pirate Projects, Act out the process of passing a law, lemonade stand, NC industry research, and North Carolina Day where everyone presents about a product from NC (Krispy Creams and Cheerwine are faves). I also like to integrate it in reading, but it can be tricky as it is hard to find resources that go along with NC angle. There are some decent resources on TPT that actually align to our NC SS curriculum.

Big Pickle, I also use CMapp...maybe we are in the same district. It does have a lot of good lessons, but some definitely need tweaking. This year I am having my students write a play that goes along with our SS.

I know what county you are on if you have CMAPP! Doesn't it provide daily lessons for you? I know when I taught math in that county it did! It was a great guide and I felt if I was a new teacher it would have easily gotten me through my first year. Niw, I don't know if other subjects we're as thorough as math!

Thank you for sharing your ideas. Are you willing to share any resources you use for your projects? It does sound like we're on the same district.

Lesson Plans

CMapp does give us daily lesson plans, but for social studies they are a little blah. Math is certainly the one with the best resources.

Last year was my first in this district (I taught 4th in a neighboring district for years). I taught most of the units exactly as the lessons are laid out, but this year I have been given more flexibility to be able to integrate into my ELA time.

Big Pickle, I would be happy to share via email as I don't want to infringe on any copy write laws. You may want to check with your principal. Some are real sticklers for following CMapp exactly as written.

He's not a stickler for CMAPP, understands that subjects need to integrated.

This link leads you to Wake County's Wiki for Social Studies. It's very good, and so far I've liked what I read.
