Fire at our School!

I just recently heard that our school had a serious fire while I was away. (I have been out of town due to a death in the family.) Many classrooms were compromised and a great deal was lost. We are now left to quickly but carefully get the building repaired in time for our first day (after Labor Day) and replace supplies lost. I am glad that nobody got hurt but what a horrible thing to have had happen!

Wow! I'm so sorry that this happened! I can't even imagine everything that will need to be replaced including electronics! Good luck to you and your school community.

I emailed the principal and she said that it won't even be safe enough to come to the building for another couple of weeks or so and that they are going to try to get as much work done as possible over the rest of the month. (Teachers are slated to start coming in during the third week of August but many wanted to come in before then.) Repairs will probably take the rest of the summer but the hope is to have everything structurally sound earlier than that. Replacing items will take a while.

That's terrible. It will be a hard adjustment for everyone I'm imagining. I would want to get in and see how my room was and what needs replacing. Structurally sound is the most important of all! Thank goodness no one was hurt. As much as we all accumulate through the years, it can be replaced.

It is terrible that so much was lost but things can be replaced. I am just beyond relieved that nobody was hurt and no lives were lost.

What awful news! I'm glad nobody was hurt, and hope that you are able to get in and start on time.

Wow! That is terrible.
You are right though, thankfully it was not during school time and that no one was hurt. I hope you didn't lose too much.

I have never had a fire destroy my room, but two years ago my room was broken into and was almost unrecognizable. Anything on the wall was ripped to shreds, the desks were turned over, my (very heavy) filing cabinet was turned on it's side and damaged and the papers inside were strewn everywhere, and anything that was plugged into the wall (pencil sharpeners, lamps, computers, projector) were all smashed beyond repair.

This happened on a Wednesday night so my class was relocated on Thursday and Friday (the school got a sub for me on Thursday so I could work in my room) and it took me about a week to get the room in somewhat of a order (waited almost 2 months for the replacement furniture and electronics to arrive).

In a way, it is a blessing the fire happened during the summer so you don't have to worry about relocating classes and dealing with all the behaviors that go along with a broken routine.

That is terrible. Our district lost a building to fire and I know how hard it was for the teachers and students.

Help securing replacements...

First, I am so sorry to hear this happened. Secondly, if/when you get to the point of trying to replace teaching materials I would like to offer help via Donorschoose. I would imagine that there will be many things that the school system cannot/will not replace, unfortunately.
When Hurricane Matthew wreaked havoc last year we had teachers lose carpets and book shelves that were not replaced by the district.

If you or other teachers decide to write proposals on Donorschoose to replace ruined items, please PM me with a link to those projects and I will do my best to help you secure funding!

Hopeful that the clean-up and rebuilding will go swiftly and smoothly!

I am so sorry that you had such a terrible experience. That sounds absolutely awful! Were the perpetrators ever caught or do you feel that you know who did all of that?

I appreciate everyone's concern and support. Thank you. I have still not heard about what caused the fire but I do know that the damage is extensive. It is surprising that the building repairs will be done in time but perhaps with school starting right after Labor Day and there being nowhere else for these students to go, there is enough time and motivation to get things done. Many items are not able to be replaced through the school or district so teachers will be on their own for all of that. Like we all discussed, though, the most important thing is that everyone is safe.

I will share again when I know more. Thanks again, everyone.
