Salaries survey
Old 07-25-2013, 03:19 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

After reading yesterday's post about beginning salaries, I'm wondering about salaries around the country. If you don't mind,

1) What is your current salary?

2) How long have you been working, any extra degrees?

3) How many contract days do you work?

4) What are your contract hours?

5) Which state/country do you live in?

Current; 36,000 rounded I do after school tutoring for most of the school year which inflates my salary...thankfully.
Worked: 7 years + masters. (My Masters is my raise and now people who are working on it will not get the pay boost if they don't finish this coming year. So unfair!)
Contract days: 185
Contract hours: what are those? Supposedly 7:45- 3:30 but we all know we do more than that. We really don't have set hours
State: Guess......NC the land of frozen wages and the budget of disrespect. Oh wait we did get a tiny bit over a 1% raise a while back.

I think variability in salary is due to cost of living in some areas. In CA and NY, it costs way more to live than it does in the south.

With that being said, I am thinking of moving to FL. I would take a pay cut, but their houses are more without the basic amenities I have in my house.

It will be interesting to see how value added evaluations influence salary. I know after last year, all future increases are based on me being rated effective.

1) What is your current salary?

Around $49,000 not including pay for extra responsibilities I have.

2) How long have you been working, any extra degrees?

Beginning of 9th year; Master's degree with 4 certifications

3) How many contract days do you work?

193 days

4) What are your contract hours?

7.5 hours/day

5) Which state/country do you live in?

Louisiana

Wow...what different salaries we all make...and to think we all teach the exact same thing with the CC...we should make the same thing too!! kids learn the same thing, teachers make the same thing..seems fair to me!
I agree with this.... IF the salaries would factor in cost of living to make them equivalent in that way. On lists I've seen, teachers in Hawai'i are #50 -- aka the worst paid-- when cost of living is factored in.

I'm not currently in a teaching line, and my job is 12 month (meaning that I work ALL work days except holidays and whatever sick/vacation I manage to accrue) so here keep that in mind

1) What is your current salary?
About $55,000. It has gone down each year for the past several years. Before someone thinks "wow, that's great pay," think about the cost of living where you may be and the cost of living here, where even milk and eggs are substantially more than they are on the mainland, not to mention gas and housing and.... ALSO remember this is a 12 month position, not 10 month like teaching positions are

2) How long have you been working, any extra degrees?
It really doesn't matter for this job. There are no steps in this job. I have my M.Ed. plus 20 (and 4 certifications as a teacher), with about 13 years as a teacher or in this role, but I make the same amount as my colleague who just finished her first year. Education doesn't matter either. You need at least a master's for this job, but you could have a PhD and still make the same. It's one pay for this job, period. Now what that means is that I can't ever go up by getting a better degree or more experience. I will always be in the same slot until I leave or retire. People in actual teaching lines WILL make more money if they get more education, but it's really not that much. Our scale may start higher than some states (don't forget the cost of living), but it tops out at a place when a lot of salary schedules around the country are just starting.

3) How many contract days do you work?
I don't know, all of them Like I said above, it's a 12 month position, no school breaks, but we do get holidays.

4) What are your contract hours?
I have to work from 7:45 to 4:30 every day.

5) Which state/country do you live in?
Hawai'i. No one comes here for the pay, if they're in education.

Some of the responses make me physically ill because it sucks so bad to have a good degree and experience and get paid crap to live in an expensive place. I have to tame the jealous beast that rages within I'm sorry, I'm getting really bitter, in part because I also have a caseload twice the size of many of my colleagues, and we have been covering for missing colleagues for years, and my pay remains dismal.

If you don't mind,
They print our salaries in the newspaper, so it isn't a secret.

1) What is your current salary?
$51,707 for the upcoming year

2) How long have you been working, any extra degrees?
I am on year 19 on the pay scale. Start year 21 Monday, but it doesn't count yet, and my first year I was technically a long-term sub. I have had a MA since 1996.

3) How many contract days do you work?
187

4) What are your contract hours?
7:50-3:20

5) Which state/country do you live in?
I am in Kentucky. I'm in a rural area with a low cost of living. My salary is solidly in the top 5 in my community, maybe even top 3.

1.) About $31,000 USD a year.
2.) Year #6
3.) 181 days
4.) 7:30 to 3:30
5.) Thailand

Not shabby when you factor in the cost of living. I manage to save about half of my salary per year and still live good.

Compared to Japan where I was making about 5.5 million yen a year (about 55,000 USD) but having a high cost of living and working more hours (210 days a year).

It is crazy to see the various pay scales here. When idiots rant and rave about how overpaid teachers are, I sit there and think - really? I make in the $30,000s. I see now they must be referring to other parts of the country where pay is better but cost of living is higher.

1) What is your current salary? about $39,000 (we are getting a one time raise this year, so I should get around $41,000 this year)

2) How long have you been working, any extra degrees? 4 years (when I finish my masters in a year, I will be raised to about $43,000)

3) How many contract days do you work? a little over 180

4) What are your contract hours? 7:15 - 2:25

5) Which state/country do you live in? Louisiana (public high school)

1) What is your current salary?
$20,500 (Very, very, small private school.) Tried to get into public schools this year and had no luck.

2) How long have you been working, any extra degrees?
This will be my 5th year. No extra degrees. I can't afford to go back to school.

3) How many contract days do you work?
183-184 (Not exactly certain.)

4) What are your contract hours?
7:30-3:30. But may have to work from 3:30-5:30 at least one day per week this year (doing our aftercare program) for no extra pay. And no, I'm not happy at all about that! Haven't received my contract yet so I'm not certain.

5) Which state/country do you live in?
TN

2. How long, extra degree 21 yrs, M.Ed
3. Days... 180
4. Hours... 7:25-3:15
5. State ... The wonderful education racing state of Tennessee
(and let me tell you racing to the top has hurt the WHOLE educational system in our state. Our new education commissioner has set up new guide-line for merit pay. They won't call it that, but it's really what it is that should begin this year, I think.)

I strongly disagree that we should all be paid the same because cost of living makes an ENORMOUS difference. My salary sounds high compared to others in this thread, but I couldn't even afford my one bedroom apartment without my husband's income. Tiny houses start at $400k to $600k in our area. We are looking to move to another, cheaper, region of the state where I will be making roughly the same salary but housing costs are significantly lower.

I do, however, believe our salaries should be comparable when taking into account cost of living.

In Hawaii, teachers can't marry teachers unless they want to live with their parents forever. You need to marry "up" the pay scale..you know, engineers (my hubby), doctors, lawyers, etc.

Is it not crazy how varied teacher salaries are across the country?!? Just crazy! I think that even with cost of living factored in there are still going to be discrepancies. Someone making $20,000-$30,000 is not going to be equivalent to someone making 3 times that salary. I know there are a couple of really high cost of living places such as San Francisco and New York City, but still...wow!

Thanks for all of the replies, I always find this kind of survey really interesting.

4) What are your contract hours? 8-4

Old 07-30-2013, 07:41 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #105

1) What is your current salary? 43,700

2) How long have you been working, any extra degrees? 5 years, just bachelors

3) How many contract days do you work? 187

4) What are your contract hours? 7:30-3:30

5) Which state/country do you live in? Central Texas, major district

For those who make 70K and above, I wonder how that compares to average salaries in your city. That seems like a lot to me. Is this as a teacher or administrator?

1) What is your current salary? Approximately $40,000

2) How long have you been working, any extra degrees? 8 years, no extras

3) How many contract days do you work? 190

4) What are your contract hours? 7:30 - 3:30 plus: Unpack Your Backpack, Curriculum Night, and 2 Music Programs a year

5) Which state do you live in? Iowa

After 21 years there are no bumps in pay unless you further your education after that or we get a base pay raise. What kills me is in our district - with 21 years of experience and a PhD - you top out at $61,700.

Thanks for asking about teacher salaries and not administrator salaries - that would surely be depressing. :-)

1) What is your current salary? Around $35,000

2) How long have you been working, any extra degrees? This will be my sixth year. I took a pay cut my first year and now my salary has been frozen for the remaining four years as it will be this year. I have a reading specialist certification (no extra $ for that). I wanted to get my master's, but I really cannot justify spending $15,000 more on my education when I will never recover that in my pay. We were told that due to the new evaluation system and lack of funding from the state, we will not receive yearly increases only performance pay based on 50% of our teaching evaluation and 50% of our student scores. Each year if we have extra money in the budget and if we have an effective or highly effective rating and acceptable student scores, we would get performance pay. Never thought that I'd take a job where I was expected to improve and do my best, but never be rewarded.

3) How many contract days do you work? 181 days

4) What are your contract hours? 7:30 to 3:30

5) Which state/country do you live in? Indiana

The cost of living in the Northeast is very high. My rent for a 3 bedroom apt is 2000 a month and believe me, it's nothing special..most homes in my area are close to or over a million dollars...and they're not mansions. Gas prices are over $4 a gallon...it's crazy. You can't make it here on minimum wage salaries.

There is a difference in costof living. In places where the pay is lower houses cost less than $200, 000. Here where I live in the NY Metro Area, you can not find house for those prices especially if they were bought a few years back..add that to the $13,000 year property taxes (yes that is right ..for a very modest house), my house expense is $2700 (plus electricity, oil to heat etc etc) my 100+ salary does not really go that far!!!

2) How long have you been working, any extra degrees? This is my third year of teaching, but the first after 15 years-I stayed home with my kids and had a hard time getting a job for a few years.

3) How many contract days do you work? 182

4) What are your contract hours? 8:00-3:30

5) Which state/country do you live in? North Dakota

***I have to add that North Dakota made it mandatory that you have to pay first year teacher's $27,500-some bigger cities start near $40,000. We are also in the midst of an economic boom and parts of the state can't find teachers. The main reason being that they couldn't afford to live here. Oil workers and people driving trucks make $100,000/year. Teacher's making $32,000 can't afford apartments that go for $2,000/month.

2. Starting my 32nd year problem was I moved here from IL after 13 years and started over at step 1

4. Professional day. 8:30-4:00

It looks like I might be in one of the worst situations. But if I do 4 more years here I'll get retirement from both states.

I'm a second year teacher, so I'm not in the $70K+ group, but I can speak for it because teachers in my area make that much after 15-20 years, depending on district. It's a teacher salary, but it's not really very good in this area. It sounds great to people in other states where houses are less than $150K (I watch House Hunters! I know! lol), but houses around here are more like $500K and up. I'm talking about a modest 3 bedroom house, maybe 1100-1200 square feet, built in the 50s or earlier. In my area, one bedroom apartments run around $1500+, two bedrooms around $1800+. Our gas is ALWAYS over $4 a gallon (I think it actually just dipped to $3.99! lol) So yeah, that $70K would be a lot in other places, but it's not a lot here!

Admin, btw, make well over $100K here. I don't know their salary schedules too well - I try to avoid looking at them.
