Great Parenting!

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I went to Walmart this morning. I went there specifically for a pair of sneakers. I wanted a black and pink pair, but didn't want to spend a lot of money. I hate when I go shopping for some very specific item because I usually end up stressed, frustrated, and annoyed. However, I ended up finding three different styles to choose from and picked my favorite pair to place in the cart.

Since I wasn't feeling any stress, I decided to roam through the aisles. I ended up in the school supplies section and tried to put blinders on since I had already purchased everything I needed for school. But as I was walking through the aisles, I couldn't help but witness some great parenting!

There was a young mother with three small children: a toddler in the cart seat, a boy about four or five, and a girl about seven or eight. The girl was throwing things in the back of the cart. And this young mother, who had to be feeling some stress, didn't ignore what her daughter was doing. She didn't yell at her either. She took the time to take out several of the items from the cart, squat down in front of her daughter, place those items in her daughter's hands, and say to her very clearly, "Manda, these are your school supplies. You must treat them with respect. These are the tools that you will need to do well in school, so respect them. Please place them in the cart carefully." And her daughter very carefully replaced each item back in the cart.

I was so impressed. As I passed her in the aisle, I told her I was very impressed with her parenting skills. I didn't stop to have a conversation, but all I could think was that if every adult raising kids took the time to make them treat things with respect, the world would be a different place.

It is now hours later, and I am still thinking of that amazing young mother.

I was at Target yesterday, and as I rounded an aisle, I saw a young mother with a toddler in her cart. The toddler was whining, and the young mother was singing softly to her. I was impressed that she wasn't yelling at her to be quiet.

YAY!!! Wish these two moms would teach a class to the parents I usually see.

However, I do try and remind myself that I'm seeing just a few seconds of their day, and I have no idea what kind of a day they are having (PMS, financial struggles, kids being less than perfect.....we've all been there!) and that they are just unfortunately having their "snapping" moment in Target, instead of at home.

I try to tell parents they're doing a good job when I see them treat their children as if they liked them. Parents need to hear that affirmation and know that they are doing a good job. I also tell my students' parents when they've done a good job with their kids.

Wow. I am amazed and impressed, not only by the mom, but by the fact that this is the first time I've seen "great parenting" and "Wal-Mart" in the same sentence. Very cool, what she did.
