that my principal told us in grade level meeting today that he wants us to work on multiplication memorization with our kids this year and they should know all of the 0,2,2,3's by the end of first. Is it me or is that CRAZY??????!!!!!!!! We can hardly memorize addition and subtraction facts to 18 and coins and bills by then.

That is absolutely nuts and not fundamentally appropriate. Is your state adopting Common Core. I would suggest you show him/her what the focus is going to be...And that we don't teach students to memorize facts....that's what messes kids up when they get in high school/middle school they can do algorithm but not understand the concepts.

I'm in NJ and we just adopted the common core standards...they did revise the Math standards and multiplication is definitely not in it. Counting by 2, 5, 10's - yes but no multiplication. In addition, memorization is not an effective tool to learning...they will learn it for the immediate moment but ask them 2 -3 weeks later...and the majority will not have retained it.

What is his background? Is he a former HS teacher or something? Your grade level team needs to sit down and talk to him again. Multiplication is not a normal first grade expectation.

talk to the person over math in your district. Your principal shouldn't be making up standards for your grade level! He obviously doesn't understand early childhood development and what is developmentally appropriate for first grade. ARGGHHH!!!

That seems absolutely ridiculous! What was his reasoning for it? I taught fourth grade for three years and it was hard for them to memorize multiplication facts even after I conceptually taught them multiplication.

Do you guys get together with other schools and do curriculum mapping? Multiplication is not developmentally appropriate. He has to be a former High school or junior high teacher, because some of our 4th graders don't even have them memorized.

I agree with the PP who said that they won't have the concept down if that's what you have to do.

We recently adopted the common core standards as well. In first grade they are being expected to know their addition and subtraction facts through ten fluently, meaning without use of hands or other strategies. As far as multiplication we found they were looking for us to teach repeated addition to start the ball rolling with multiplication but we were not expected to teach memorization of facts. I have taught grades 1-4 and the best way my kids "clicked" with multiplication was to teach repeated addition and then go onto using numbers. Hmmmmm. He may be having difficulty interpreting the new standards.

I just read the Common Core standards again. I can't even figure out where he could have possibly misinterpreted the standards. Do you have something like a math curriculum coordinator in your district? I would drop a dime on this craziness! Good luck in this totally inappropriate situation!
