I am teaching my first history lesson on the French and Indian War, with a focus on why fur trading was so important. I am not really sure how to get this lesson conceptualized? does anyone have any ideas to help start this lesson off.

This may be way off as I do not teach this topic. If so just ignore.

I would start by showing man made fabrics of today. Show how they stretch, they can be light for hot weather, warm for cold weather, dry quickly when you get wet..... Then walk over and throw them away ( in a clean trash can). Tell your students these were not invented yet during this time period.

I would then take out a sample of a cotton plant, cotton fabric, picture of flax plant, linen fabric, some sheep's wool and wool fabric. I would also take some kind of natural fur. Maybe these can be borrowed from a local pioneer home or museum. Allow students to feel them.

Show them how thin cotton and linen are and that they would not provide great warmth. These were the fabrics worn in warm weather. Explain that people wore wool in the winter. This was enough to keep them warm indoors, but not outdoors. Remember the homes were only warm around the fire. It was not even heat like we have in our homes today.

Then show the fur. Explain how the dense fur really helped to keep them warm while out in the elements walking or riding their horse. They were also used as bed covers.

Furs were actually vital to their survival.

Good luck with the history lessons.
