Hello! My next science unit involves Earth/Moon/Sun. I'm looking for interactive hands-on activities to teach this unit. We have to teach rotation, revloution, seasons, and historical contributions in understanding the Earth/Moon/Sun system. Thanks for sharing!

How simple?

How simple do you want the interactive activity? I taught geography but used to do the following - adopted from one of our science teachers.

Push all room furniture and students to the edges of the room.

Have a stool with a bright light on it (careful of cords!) or - I used a student with a strong flashlight, standing in the middle of the room.

Dim the lights. BTW - it worked better with a colored light.

Have one student side step around the stool - at a distance of maybe five feet - always facing the stool and light.

"What would the earth be like if (as is true with at least one of our planets) if the earth only made revolutions around the sun but never rotated?" (We had discussed the terms rotate/revolution.)

Students see that one side would always be lit . . etc.

Then have the student start to turn slowly as he/she very, very slowly walks around the stool. Ah, seasons.

The science teacher had a second student join hands with the first, facing each other. Then the TWO of them rotated as they both revolved very, very slowly (you don't want them falling over) around the stool. Students WATCH CAREFULLY what happens to the light.

The earth ALWAYS faces the same side of the moon and v/v. At times the moon blocks light from hitting the earth (eclipse) and the earth can black the light from hitting the moon (new moon?).

I hope I explained that comprehensibly.
