Hi,

I am planning to do Night of the Twisters and maybe Island of the Blue Dolphins as the next book clubs. Does anyone any have any good sites or activities for these?

I considered purchasing some ready made teacher plan resources but its hard to know what's good online and worth it. Any recommendations?

Also, can anyone suggest read-alouds to go with the adventure-survival theme?

We did Island of the Blue Dolphins earlier this year. I have them use "resources" Karana would have on hand to write a letter. Of course they can use paper to pretend it is something else, but have to make it look like it. I get some pretty creative ideas.

I have also had them draw or 'make' the island with materials of their choice. I have required that the project show Karana's experiences somehow (notes or objects.) I have had them do shadow boxes with 'keepsakes' karana might have kept. They have to support their choices.

In a couple of weeks we will start The Cay and Call It Courage. I am going to do some island activities, survival, bravery, and tie it up with a FEAST. We will have 'squid' (hot dogs that look like little octopi) whale crackers, fruit, and coconut. I did it a couple of years ago and it was a fun culmination.
