Read Alouds/Picture Books

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Okay, I am teaching fifth grade. I used to teach Kindergarten so I have A LOT of picture books. I am trying to compile a list of read-alouds I can use to intro./teach various skills in grade 5. It is hard to think of the books I have and try to remember how I might apply them. Some I have come up with...

The Mitten for word choice
If You Give a Pig a Pancake, etc. for circle stories
Tikki Tikki Tembo for setting
The Bear, the Mouse and the Red, Ripe Strawberry for transitional words and descriptions
Click Clack Moo for persuasive writing

Can anyone make suggestions of skills/genres and read alouds they have used that were succesful?

I like Double Trouble in Walla Walla for word choice.

I like Round Trip by Ann Jonas for an example of a circle story. It also works well for teaching them to work a math problem backwards as one strategy.

I like The Wretched Stone and the Wreck of the Zepher by Roald Dahl for inferencing.

Encounter by Jane Yolen is great for author's purpose and point of view.

The Secret Knowledge of Grown-ups is a humorous book written in a predictable pattern that the students can use to write their own version.

Weslandia would be my favorite for setting.

The Sweetest Fig or Mr. Peabody's Apples are good titles to share for author's purpose.

I would teach onomatopoeia with Click, Clack, Moo.

Unfortunately for cause and effect.

The Mary Celeste:An Unsolved Mystery from History works well for drawing conclusions.
