So, if you were assigning a report on an explorer, what would you have each of the paragraphs be about.
I was thinking:

-early life
-who, why, where they explorered
-affects of the explorations
-???

What else would you add? or change?

Thanks,
Tulips

Instead of reports, I have my students create "trading cards" of 10 explorers. They research and find facts on the topics you listed, but write them as "stats" like on baseball cards. They put a picture of the explorers on the front. They seem to enjoy this activity, and they learn about more than one explorer in the process.

That sounds like a fun way to present their info when they're done with the reports. Unfortunately, our last district mandated writing type is "the research report." So they actually have to do one and be graded on it for their benchmark test.

Some of these you already have...

name
background/family information
country sailed for
when they sailed
purpose of journey
challenges faced
discoveries made
where they explored
what, if anything, they brought back

additional, if permitted, make a map of the journey

I have the students write a postcard from the New World back to the King/Queen they sailed for.

Instead of a research report, I had my students choose options from a menu. It was a lot of work for them and I think they were overwhelmed. So, I would suggest just having them do one/two activities.
