So if you could create a 15 hour program that was geared towards low ses students coming from a public school into an elite gifted building what would it look like? I have a few ideas but need more! What would be beneficial for them to help make the transition easier? My P asked me to create this program and I would love some advice!

Thoughts? Thanks!

I see you haven't gotten any responses. So I'll throw in my 2 cents.

I guess I would focus on resources - especially those outside of class. Maybe take them to a public library to show them how to get internet access and resources they may need for projects. Let them know who to talk to if they need materials, like project boards or even writing materials.

But that won't fill 15 hours! I guess I would also teach them a little bit about how the brain works to try and establish (or reinforce) a growth mindset. Maybe show this video and learn more about a couple of the people: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnbMJ_aDSVw&feature=fvsr.

I just found this board so I don't know if you're still looking for a response but look into U-STARS PLUS. Using Science Talent and something something I forgot...but a great nurturing program for underrepresented students.
