$100 budget for first grade

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am a first year teacher at a Christian school. I will be teaching first grade and we use the A Beka curriculum. I was just told that I will have $100 to spend on my classroom. We can buy from stores or catalogs. What are the first grade essentials? Thank you!

You should probably post this on the first grade board, however, I will tell you what I think.

I would send home a list of essentials that every child needs to have on the first day:
1 box crayons (crayola preferred)
1 box Markers (crayola preferred)
1 box colored pencils (again, I like crayola)
____ one subject note book (figure out if you need note books for journals and if you want them to have any for other subject ares. I had them bring just 1 when I taught first at a poor private school)
1 durable take home folder for important papers, homework, and parent communication
1 or 2 boxes of tissues to be added to the classroom supply
1 ruler
no. 2 pencils (10 pencils per child, you may have to ask for more around Christmas)
1 package loose leaf paper
1 package computer paper
3 Large glue sticks per child

Then throughout the year I send wish list items home in the newsletter asking for whatever else we needed.

You can spend your budget on any of the items above. Remember to check out all the staples deals. Also you may need:
Name plates for desks (part way through the year you may need to change them)
Bulletin board supplies
Name tags for field trips, first day, special visitors, etc
sharpies

You may also want to save some of that for projects through out the year. I would always find myself spending money on material for science projects. Those could also go on a wish list though.

For your class, I'd focus on bulletin board trim; bulletin board pieces that will stay up the whole year...Colors, Shapes, Nursery Rhymes.
I believe you will have the Letters & Numbers from A Beka; or will they require you to purchase those using your $100?
Also, name plates, paint brushes & paints are a high priority for me.
I wish you a great year!
