I have a boy in my room who speaks very little, although he murmurs to himself all the time. He doesn't watch me that much during group time, either. When I asked him on Monday what he did over the weekend, he said 'go park'. I asked him what he played at the park and he said 'slides' and then 'go swings'.

He also still cannot label colors correctly. He does have the concept of colors, though, and consistently told me the correct color that came next in an AB pattern we did recently.

Any suggestions for how to help him? I have told him the color of his table three times daily when we sit for snacks/lunch for the past month and he STILL doesn't know it consistently.

Maybe you could have him reffered for speech and language?

Also, I would just say a complete sentence each time and have him say it back to me. For example, when he said go park, I would say, "I went to the park?" and have him say the whole sentence back.

I had a kiddo that came into preschool speaking like that, and by the time he went to K, he was a little chatter box!

I would love to refer him, but his parents are quite resistant to the idea of his having a language problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do model correct speech back to him, and he does repeat what I say. His parents do the same thing. I'm glad this technique worked for your student, and here's hoping it will have the same effect on mine!

Thanks again.
