I am very excited to use this novel with my 5th graders, but I am looking for ideas and/or activities to supplement the little I have.

This really upsets me about this book - I had bought this book, with my own money, for my class to read. Now guess what? The 6th grade teacher is stealing it on me and doing it with her own class.
We traded off and I got the book Holes, but it's just not the same. I gave her my guide that I made while I was student teaching and I don't have it with me anymore. Let me search around for it and I'll try and post it here for you or e-mail it to you.
It's SUCH a good book!

I did this book in the beginning of the year and my students loved the book! I had my students do diamante poems on the two of the characters. They drew jewish stars and place the poem on it.

I do this novel with my class at the beginning of the year. The kids really get into and love the story, even the boys! I have a couple of files I use that I can email to you. I put together a literature packet that we work through as we read and I can mail you a copy if you are interested in it.

My class just finished this unit and I used a combination of Edhelper and the book report website. Edhelper has a great list of activities to use with Number the Stars. I also have a Smart Board so I pulled some background resources from the Discovery Education website. All my students really enjoyed the whole unit... great book!!

We just finished this today! Since the book is rich in symbolism I had the kids illustrate and describe in one or two sentences a symbol to represent each chapter in their reading response journals. We are currently making slideshows using googledocs. The kids are really getting into it! The kids are citing pics and backgrounds....doing an amazing job!

A great book!
