I am looking for some ideas that you may have for a fun unit to do with my 5th and 6th grade class during our two weeks of testing. Any thoughts?

A couple of years ago, I did a forensics unit (I did mine after testing, but it would work during, too). I based it on this unit: http://webspace.webring.com/people/g.../whodunnit.htm
It was a lot of fun and even though it says it's for gifted elementary students, my 5th graders had no problem with it.

some poetry or a fractured fairy tale? They need something creative after all that - two weeks? Wow, we do all of ours in 4 days.

We did a Whootie Owl story and all of the writing activities that go with it. My kids always love getting in to these! We'll do the reader's theater and turn the story writing into a competition. I usually make a giant animal from the story on BB paper and laminate it and award it to the winner.

Fairy Tale Newspaper

Towards the end of the year, my kids pick a theme and create a whole newspaper around that theme. So, for example, they may pick fairy tales and they create comic strips, sports events, advertisements all based on a fairy tale theme. We had Cinderella's Advice Column, Rapunzels Hair Advice etc.
They picked some creative themes and worked in groups of 4. Some of the themes they selected besides fairy tales were Monty Python, Twilight, Gregor, Baseball etc
Fun unit!
