Next week, after state testing, I am going to be doing a short three day "unit" on the book Mysteries from History: The Mary Celeste. I read on here where several people reccommend it. I was just curious if anyone had any ideas for activities to go along with it. Any help will be greatly apprecieated!

by reading articles from online and then have students write their own theories as to what they believed happened. They might even write a script and act out the events.

There are also a couple more books in that series. You could have the students read all of them and make some text to text comparisons. Or have different kids read different books and then create the reader's theater for their story to perform for the rest of the class. One of the books is about the Salem witch trials and the other is about Roanoke.

I love the idea for the readers theatre and the text to text comparisons. I have the roanoke book as well so that is definitely a possibility. Thanks for the input! : )

Very Creative Responses

I thought some of you might be interested to know what I ended up doing for these lessons. For the Mary Celeste lesson, I read the story to the students using the Elmo to show the pictures. We then did a theory activity where I typed the different theories onto cards and gave them to different groups. The groups had to decide if they agreed or disagreed with the theories. THEN, I had the students write a newpaper article about what they thought happened to the Mary Celeste. They did excellent and I got some very creative responses!

For the Roanoke lesson, I did the same thing. I read the book and did the theory activity. But for their independent work they stayed in groups and created a television script. i had them imagine that the colonists had been found and they had to go back and forth asking them questins. It was very cute and the students really enjoyed it!
