Opinions please!!

I am currently a 2nd grade teacher and was asked to switch jobs to ESL coordinator for the district. Right now we have a high Arabic population and part of my job, starting in January, is to develop a program for our K-3 ESL school. I would love people's opinions on what they do at their school that works well. The teachers and principal are open to doing push in and pull out. Does anyone have good assessments they give or a good language acquisition program? Any feedback would be great!!

I really like the Avenues books and materials. It would be costly, but it is good ESL material. The books are leveled by grade, and there are lots of additional materials like big books, little leveled readers, posters, flashcards, etc. Look on hbavenues.com.

I second the Avenues program--it is used as the basis for ESL programming in my district. Check out the SIOP websites--a group of strategies for supporting ELLs: Making Content Comprehensible for (Elementary or Secondary) English Language Learners are their major text books. They have supports for administration, too.

Here are some other resources that may help. I also suggest you explore your state's ELL standards--which you probably have--and other states' as well. (The first few below are the ones I'd recommend the most)

Thanks for the suggestions. Our elementary school has Avenues but starting at level 2 so I will have to look into the lower levels since most of our students come in speaking no English.
I'll definitely check out those websites!

We use National Geographic Curriculum and I love it!! It aligns with all of the standards, and has great materials and activities.

I was unaware that National Geographic had an ESL curriculum! Can you share more about it, lalaloopy?
Thanks!

I think National Geographic bought out Hampton Brown. Avenues has a copyright of 2003 I think and the National Geograhic version should be the newer version of Avenues. I worked with "Inside" which is the Middle School verson of Avenues and it was definately different than Avenues.
