Shape Book

Clip to ScrapBook #2

One thing we do in our fourth grade is to make a book in the shape of our state. It's the size of a piece of construction paper with a piece of copy paper glue-sticked to the top of it (leaving a 1/4 inch border.) Each page can be a different color, or if they are OCD like me, each page has to be the same......

There are 8 pages:

1 front cover -- title and decorated
2 detailed map -- copy map onto page, draw in rivers, mountains, etc.
3 state symbols -- draw & color state seal, bird, tree, etc.
4 important people -- cut out small pictures of important people from your state and which city they are from.
5 historic happenings -- highlights from your state's history
6 time line
7 economics -- agriculture, industries, etc.
8 My Mississippi -- a drawing/photo of student doing their favorite thing in their state -- camping, fishing, football, sitting on the porch swing drinking sweet tea

The pages are either hole-punched and put together with a metal ring, tied with ribbon, connected with a brad, or stapled in the top left or right corner.

We usually do this the last quarter of school when they have finished most of their social studies.

Make each block something to do with your state:
1. State Map
2. State tree
3. State bird
4. State flower
5. State capital
6. Motto
7. Flag
8. Famous Person
9. Places to visit

You could use any other ideas you have for each block or give students some choice in the matter. Once they finish all of their blocks, they lay them out in the order they want them to be in and tie them together using a hole punch and yarn.

Last year I did state scrapbook. They drew pictures for the photographs, had to write captions for the pictures showing the learned some information, make a title for each page, and decorate each page. I told them the content that should be presented on each page.

Reports of famous Floridians

I contacted a local Papa John's Pizza for a donation of pizza boxes and we used those as our template for their reports on a famous person. Afterwards we had a presentation day where parents came in to see the projects presented. We had Florida foods like kumquats, plantains (?), strawberries, oranges, and of course Papa John pizza. The kids enjoyed the choice of projects and people. I am attaching the worksheets I created for this project.

p.s. I also like the idea of creating floats from shoe boxes, maybe highlighting different aspects of florida such as agriculture, manufacturing, tourism.
Oh, forgot, we created commercials of some of the above mentioned topics.

State Birthday Party
Old 07-15-2009, 01:19 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #10

Last year, we celebrated New Jersey's birthday. The idea came right from here on ProTeacher! I have to say that it was the highlight of the year! Check out the pictures on my (newly constructed and still under construction) webpage! If you go to the NJ party album, you can read a description of what we did. Hoping Florida's b-day falls during the school year!http://room24bb.shutterfly.com/

We also did state symbol projects. PM me if you'd like to see the assignment and grading rubric. When we studied the seal of NJ, they made their own personal seals..."The Great Seal of Bobby" and so on.
Cute.
MissMom6...love the shape booklet idea! Heck - all of these ideas are amazing! I PT!

Good luck in 4th - it is great!

Thank you all for sharing your wonderful state project ideas! I've been looking for some ideas myself and you all have provided some great project ideas.

I would actually like to do a Florida project where every month the students focus on a certain aspect of Florida and add it to their overall project. Maybe a scrapbook or some type of book/publication that they create. Let say the first month of school the focus will be on when Florida became a state and information about the state flag, for example. Students can learn about this that first month and add their first page of the Florida book with this information. This idea is still brewing in my head so I haven't gotten all the details down. I will keep thinking about it in the weeks to come.

I assign Florida projects early in the school year. Each student is assigned a historic city/site to research and present to the class. These presentations actually preview many of the topics we will be learning about throughout the year (Seminoles, spanish exploration, ect.). This has worked very well and the children seem to enjoy it. A few parents went so far as to take their child to the assigned city/site for first hand learning.
