Clip to ScrapBook #1

I will teaching in a new school this year and the 3rd and 4th grade want to use novels to teach reading along with literature circles. The teachers want to base the novels around themes. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Genre and Authors
Old 06-26-2009, 06:45 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #12

Don't forget about genre studies and author studies. (Other posters...please add author names appropriate for third and fourth graders.)

Genre Studies:
--mystery
--fantasy
--realistic fiction
--tall tales
--folktales
--nonfiction (could be based on your studies in science and social studies)
--biography
--poetry
--science fiction
--historical fiction
Reader's theater could be incorporated into any of these genre studies.

Author Studies:
--Patricia Polacco (great website - Kids can go online to take quizzes on her books.)
--Jan Brett
--Kevin Henkes
--Jerry Pickney
--David Wiesner
--David Shannon
--Dav Pilkey
--Eve Bunting
--Allen Say
--Jon Scieszka
--Robert San Souci
--Chris Van Allsburg

Thanks for the Econ Titles

Some other Econ Titles that come to mind are:
Toothpaste Millionaire by Jean Merrill - 3/4
Not for a Billion Gazillion Dollars by Paula Danzinger - High 3-4
Henry Reed's Babysitting Service by Keith Robertson - Series 4

I'm looking for a High 3rd grade group probably reading on 4th or 5th grade level at the least. I have read Toothpaste Millionaire and it really is a good story if my memory serves me correctly.

Go to Gay Miller's website. She has MANY books with questions and activities for novels that go great with third - fifth grade themes.

A really good way to figure out the leveling of the books is to go to http://www.scholastic.com and use the Book Wizard. Depending on how your school looks at reading levels, this wizard will help you determine a good match. It also gives a ton of similar books that your kids might enjoy.

It's fun to dig and I think that most of us that visit PT are "diggers."
