Advice please! Edmodo, wiki, or blog?

I'm moving from 2nd to 6th next year and want to choose a communication tool. I'd love to hear the pros and cons for each tool. This year I send out emails to parents with a distribution. For 6th grade I want both parents and students to be able to communicate. What do you think - wiki, blog, or edmodo?

I use Edmodo for teacher/student and student/student communication and really like it.

For parents I just use email and I think that it best for me.

A few have linked with their child on Edmodo but not many.

I set up my Edmodo account and asked my teacher friend to sign in to check it out. She just emailed and told me that she typed edmondo by mistake and found a porn site. I think I have to dump my edmodo site and try to find something similiar. Is there another site that has similiar qualities than edmodo? Has anyone else come to this decision?

I wouldn't dump Edmodo just because of that. It's a great site and I use it with my students. For students, you could have it bookmarked on school computers and for parents you could email a link - this gets around the problem of someone mistyping the name. I don't think it's the best for parent communications though.

What are you planning to do with Edmodo? If you're looking for online discussions, then something like Collaborize Classroom might be a good alternative.

If you're looking for some place to post assignments for your students, then a blog or wiki could work well.

I use a wiki as my online classroom, Edmodo for some discussions & to turn in assignments & a blog for posting student work for parents to see.

our new computer teacher set the jr high (7-8) up on edmodo. Keep in mind, small private school. We've had 3 or 4 suspensions because students use it inappropriately. Sexual comments, harrassment, etc.

i've not used edmodo at all. I have used kidblog, and liked it.

For parents I email or text.

I love Edmodo. I got my school to pilot it. The feedback we are getting is 99% positive. I really think you will love it

I have set my classroom up to use Edmodo. I will be teaching Language Arts/Science/ Social. This way I can use the site as a way to check my students' grammar. I plan on giving them a focus goal for the week-fits with the reading grammar goal-They will be asked to talk to five classmates during the week on the Edmodo site. I then go in to check on Friday, to grade their progress. They will receive areas to work on, practice DOL to correct, as I review their conversations with their classmates. We only have 20 minutes planned for Language Arts each day. This way they can practise their skills and talk at the same time. I have never tried it but think it is worth the effort.

I love Edmodo and so do my students. We've done blogs and Edmodo and I really like Edmodo. I've done wikis with various professional development things, but not with kids, but I still think Edmodo is the best.

Students can be set to read only in Edmodo, if you prefer. It is a click of a button if you don't want them to post outside of school hours.
