What do you splurge on?

This is kind of a piggyback on the fugality thread, but as much as we all love to save where we can, on what products, activities, etc. are you willing to splurge?

For us, even when we're low on money DH, DD and I will meet his sister and BIL out for dinner on Sunday nights.

I love Dreft detergent and will buy it about once every couple of months to use on the sheets, towels and spinkled on carpet before I vacuum as a nice, light air freshener! It smells soooooooooo good!

Downey Fabric softener or dryer sheets!

I will only buy my meat, produce and bakery products from Publix!

Has to be Charmin toilet paper !

Nancy

I like nice things, but I won't pay full price. I can search sales and use coupons and shop consignment & thrift stores.

I love high quality shoes and purses. I always have Jif peanut butter and Charmin toilet paper. Still, never full price for any if it. I have to have quality bras, and I am a sheet snob. I have over 10 pairs of $100+ heels, but I never paid more than $39 for any of them.

I will splurge on play tickets- actually I sit in the balcony but I feel like it's a splurge because I'm going.
I will pay more from fruit or veggies that I want to eat because they are out of season.
Other than that I don't splurge on much. I wish I felt like I could. I'm so afraid of running out of money that sometimes I cheat myself. I need to splurge more.

I splurge on books at the half price book store. I easily spend $50 every time i walk into the place.

I also plurge on Oikos greek yogurt. Nearly a dollar a container, but its so good and nutritious, and i just love it. Yogurts that are cheaper taste really gross to me and do not have much flavor.

I get my nails (acrylic) done every two weeks. It's a big splurge and commitment, but I bit my nails for years and my real nails are so weak and brittle now. I love having pretty hands.
I just look at it as maintenance, like haircuts and visits to the dentist...sort of.

Moderately-priced but well-located seats at musical theater productions a couple times a year for myself and my daughter, her guy, and my daughter-in-law. Also trashy paperback novels by favorite authors, but I do buy them at Wal Mart or Target under list price. And a Starbucks drink about once a month!

My splurge is for a house cleaner twice a month. It is so nice to have someone come in and do the floors and bathrooms. It also forces me to keep my home de-cluttered.

a lot.

We have a lot of electronics, but I guess that would be my husband's splurge.

We usually have a nice vacation - Hawaii for the first time last summer.

We have a nice house, but our furnishings are sparse, and mostly older.

Doggie daycare about 3x a week during the school year for our dog.

I splurge on artwork, real art--the kind you buy at galleries. They know me by name at a nearby gallery, and I frequent other galleries too. I also buy directly from some of our local artists. I buy mostly numbered prints, but I also have some artist proofs and even some originals (two of which I commissioned directly from the artists). I always have the pieces gallery matted/framed. I could open a museum some day.

I feel like I'm pretty good at getting quality for bargain prices and don't usually "splurge" in the sense of spending more than is necessary or being wasteful, but the thing I'm willing to buy weekly no matter what coupon or sale is available is quality OJ.

It's about $3-4/week more than cheap brands and $5-6 more than concentrate, and I don't care. I like OJ to be strong and tart, not thin and sweet. I justify it by saying OJ is nutritious.

Travel...we save and scrimp pretty much everywhere else to take trips. On a smaller scale, orange juice. Growing up with orange trees in my backyard, I am totally spoiled. I love oj but do not like most brands of it.

When it was time to buy a new car, I splurged a little and bought a Hybrid. It was more money, but hopefully it's paying for itself in better gas mileage. Recently, I splurged and bought a good coffeemaker. Other than that, my money goes straight to college tuition for my kids.

I will only buy Charmin..even when the coupon is only for $0.25 - which is often!

Every two to three months I get a pedicure - because it feels good and it relaxes me!

Since I've gotten pregnant, we splurge on eating out more because I am just too tired to cook and DH usually works really long hours and is too tired by the time he gets home.

Not that it is a splurge, but we put DH through grad school and as soon as he graduated it was my turn. Now I'm three classes away from my degree - at about $1,200 a semester!

I splurge on:

Designer purses - mostly Coach, but have Burberry, Kate Spade, Michael Kors...and more. Love them!

Shoes

Clothes - like to dress nice, but look for sales, clearance, coupons. Get ideas from magazines and shows and then look for similar styles at Kohl's, Target, etc.

Hair products to tame curly hair

Books (mostly ebooks these days)

Technology (love my iPad, iPhone, and iMac)

We almost never eat out but I do shop organic and all natural. I buy all my meat either from a butcher (grass fed, etc...) or cage free/grass fed from the grocery store. I actually spend about the same amount of money though, because the things I buy can be used for many meals compared to when I bought more processed foods as processed food is expensive too.

Some hair products-I love Tiki's dry shampoo.

I also have some make up products from Lancome (although most are from the regular store).

I guess I don't really splurge on much!

Makeup - i only buy bare minerals

Hair - Get it colored every 8 weeks

Pedicures - about every 8 weeks

Vacations - I don't go on them often, but when I do I spend. I don't want to be worried and caught up with money

Sports tickets to football or baseball - I'm perfectly happy dropping $100 on a ticket!

Everywhere else in life I scrimp and save. But when I spend, I spend big and well

I splurged on diamond hoop earrings and a diamond tennis bracelet which I wear most every day. I got them on sale/clearance and then financed them on a 0% card for a year each. I did not buy them at the same time. I figured it was my retirement gift to me even though it was a couple of years after I retired.

Good for you Trinia2. I did the same thing when I retired. I bought some small silver diamond hoops, and then for Christmas my husband got me some larger black diamond hoops. We deserve it!

Our big ones are eating out, vacations, and extras in our cable package.

And the silly little one - I buy a ridiculously expensive brand of paper towels purely because they come in the biggest rolls, and that means I have to change it less.

I splurge on items for my husband's splurge- a weekend home by the coast. It's fun searching for decorating items and furniture, even though I shop at outlets and such. A new house and furniture all at once! I am so frugal otherwise.

Philosophy skincare - I love the way my skin looks when I used the Miracle Worker products.

Make up -I only wear Bare Minerals.

Birkenstock sandals. I live in them all summer and I love the cute patterned sandals.

Jif Natural Peanut butter - I love it.

Cage Free eggs - I feel better about eating them knowing the chickens are given room to move around.

Vacations - I love to travel. I would rather make coffee at home and cut back on eating out and make do with a dumb phone and save money in other ways so that I can take great vacations.

  • Pedicures in the warm months
  • hair colored but only about 4 times a year (those who go every 5 weeks look a whole lot better but I can't justify the money that often)
  • Starbucks with my daughter every two months or so
Otherwise, I'm pretty frugal.

Food - we eat mostly local or organic and although I wish our grocery bill was smaller, food is very important to us.

Family activities / vacations - I LOVE to travel and to do family outings so even if it's not in the budget I find ways to pay for trips, museums, plays, etc.

Everything else I am really cheap about, haha. DH cuts our hair, we have cars that a re paid for and well loved, I shop Goodwill for clothes, and we live in a pretty small house.
