Supply Donations

How do you feel about asking parents and teachers to donate supplies for a schoolwide project run by the school district?
Store bought, expensive supplies, in quantities.

We did NOT get many donations (only 12).

Wondering why?

I usually just ask for recyclables (paper towel rolls, cereal boxes).

The supplies on the list cost money ($2 & up) and they're NOT reusable.

So, we're using what we have on hand and back to my recyclables way.

Students will have to use their ingenuity and creativity.

I think it would kind of depend on how it’s approached. If it was a note or something going out in general, and parents who wanted to donate could, I think I’d be okay with it. If it was a situation where Little Johnny or Suzie’s parents are asked to buy something specific, I would feel weird about. People never know what others are going through. Some people may be struggling to pay the bills that month.

And then it’s like if you get 1/2 of what you need, but not enough to finish the project, then what do you do. Send back to the parents what they brought? Ask for donations again?

I have sent out general notes asking for extra Germ-X, Lysol, and Kleenex’s, though.

On the one hand, I don't think it hurts to ask... we never know who is listening and may donate.

But, on the other hand, as you found out, you cannot count on the donations actually happening.

I do think it is great for students to use their imagination. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I have a big problem with the school asking for anything from the parents. The schools where I'm at are funded by property taxes, so they already pay and I don't think we should ask for more. Where does that money go though? That's a whole different topic....

schoolwide projects

are always funded by our PTO. It is so great to have it this way.

If the school district has schoolwide projects, the school district should fund it. If it isn't funded by the school district it shouldn't happen.

Can anyone think of a different career where the administration decides to implement a company wide project and then doesn't fund it? No? Neither can I. Why do school districts then do it? Because we as teachers get sucked in to taking it on because "think of the children."

If itís run by the school district, they need to supply what is needed. No teacher or parent should have to buy anything. I would use what was donated and thatís it.

With Mommy and caseycat, school district should be responsible for supplies.
