Middle School math summer online class

Clip to ScrapBook #1

My nephew just completed 6th grade. I think he was in a higher level math class. His school is requiring (or highly suggesting) that he take a 7 week prealgebra summer course through the virtual school and then he will be placed in Algebra 1 Honors as a 7th grader. My sister said that she and many other parents at his school are really upset. He will have to spend 2 - 3 hours per day during his summer vacation doing math online. I, personally, am not a fan of learning math online - especially if another option is available. My sister teaches 7th grade ELA and I teach middle school math so she asked my opinion about this and she's in agreement about learning math online. I'm just curious about what others think about this. I'm not in favor of pushing kids into high school classes in 7th grade unless they are really ready for it. This situation just doesn't seem real kosher to me.

Did the school give detailed reasons for this “suggestion”? To me, it sounds like the school doesn’t have a teacher/class for prealgebra but students need it before taking Algebra 1.

Who gets to choose...child or parents or school? Does child want to do summer school on line? Will child be fine not getting into, the Honors class?

I also do not believe in pushing kids into Honors classes in middle school or even Freshman year of high school.

I agree with Keltikmom. Is seems like they need it to be successful going into honors algebra so it serves as a pre rec but they dont have a teacher for it. If you dont think taking it online or during summer is going to work your nephew then I would have him not be a part of honors algebra next year. Some kids learn well online-my son for example learns best-including in math-online. He also assesses better online so he always performs higher on the state test than in class but I know plenty of kids who are the opposite so perhaps this is a great option for some kids and others would do better to opt out. You have to do what works for you, but the school also has to make sure that kids have the foundational knowledge to be successful in a class and this was their band-aide for that. So if it doesn't work for the family take a different math next year. They cant make him take the class online, he can opt out, but it can be the best way for the school to determine that students are ready for an advanced course.
