What do I eat before exercising?

I've joined the local rec/fitness center and plan to exercise on my way home each afternoon. I eat lunch around 12 and know I will want to snack on something before I exercise around 5:30 or 6.

Every time I google my question, I get ads for fitness drinks and such. So what should I eat as a snack to hold me over until dinner and give me nourishment for exercising?

What about string cheese, nuts, a granola bar, or a piece of fruit?

A hard boiled egg would give much needed protein. Or try some raisins or nuts.

I would opt for a protein snack. Maybe

have some deli turkey or ham roll-ups with a hand full of almonds, yogurt with handful of almonds, small container of cottage cheese with almonds, or cheddar cheese with crackers and some fruit. You definitely want a protein source for the energy. Good luck with the exercise!

Make sure you've been good about sipping water that day. Something with natural sugar (apple, juice, etc) and some light protein (almonds are my fav). In a pinch I keep Clif Blok Shots in my gym bag for a little boost.

I workout almost daily right after school. I make sure to drink lots of water all day and eat either string cheese or if I'm really hungry a protein bar (I prefer Luna) about an hour before I hit the gym.

Before the gym I usually have trail mix or a small protein bar. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time after you eat and before you start your workout.

I either eat a piece of fruit or take one of the 100 calorie pack of almonds. I find the fruit works better than the almonds.

I usually have an apple, right before, and I don't feel like I want to bring up anything- as I felt in the past when eating other foods.
