EW. I've been teaching elementary school for 21 years. This has happened and been a big issue at least 5 times.

Meth smells like cat pee.....not saying that is happening in your case but something to be aware of.

Cats typically go on porous areas when they have a litter box aversion for some reason. It could be that the litter box isn't cleaned enough; the cat cannot get into the litter box, or another cat or other animal is bullying the cat.

Also, yes, children's belongings will smell like cat pee if they are around meth.

And I was feeling awful the other day that a 3-year-old's clothes smelled like plain old cigarette smoke!

It's sad we have to be suspicious of even worse nowadays.

If it is just a cat, though - some do "mark their territory". The bag may have picked up other smells from school, and the cat was sort of reclaiming it.

I think they do that to either mark their territory, or to protest.

My ex scared our dear little tortie one day. She peed on his things since that time, till he finally left. Good girl She got lots of pats from me!

However yes, I have noticed that kids come to school smelling of cat, and I have to wonder if it's truly cat, or meth.

Cat or meth?

Sad that we have to wonder about that.
I do know that cats will go other places if they do not have an acceptable litter box. Many of my students don't have furniture in their homes, so their clothes and backpacks are piled on the floor, and the cats do pee on it.
I've asked kids who smell like cat pee if they have a cat. If they say no, I call CPS.

My cats pee on my backpack, and my cart. I have three neutered female cats, and two of them are in a territorial dispute with each other for the last few years. One of them fights by hosing down everything around, doors, cabinets, furniture, boxes, artwork, car tires, you name it. She must be an acrobat, because she managed to get the area around the doorknobs on the front door.

I just have to spray my backpack with some cleaner occasionally, or it will transfer to the back of my shirt.
