Our family has had an amazingly beautiful English Setter for the last 13-14 years or so. He has had declining health off and on for a year or so. I had a small/mid-sized cancerous tumor removed from his doggy "elbow" several months ago.

About a week or so ago, he started acting odd and quit eating as well. DH took him to the vet today and she said he has tumors in his spleen that split it and it is causing blood to fill his abdomen. The vet said he will most likely die within a week.

I am crushed but DH is even moreso! I will have to watch him closely. He is prone to depression anyway and this dog has been his pet, companion, and best friend for all 13 years. He was a great hunter and guard dog.

Canine cancer stinks. I hope you get the most time with your precious furbaby that you can. I also hope your hubby makes it through as best he can. Saying goodbye is the worst part of loving an animal. Been there...

Im so sorry. It is so hard. When we lost my 18 year old chi mix I was devastated. I had her from the time she was 6 weeks and I found her at the pound. It truly is a death in the family. I'll be thinking about you and your husband. Pets are great companions but it hurts so badly to say goodbye.

He made it through the night but it was rough and DH alternated between staying up and lying on the floor with him. He seems distressed and in pain though so DH may choose to put him down to avoid pain.

This situation is so heartbreaking. 13-14 yrs is a pretty good amount of time with your dog, but I know, it never seems long enough. I'm sorry.
