Hi, I am also in VA and Iíve been a member of AFT for about 24 years. Iím also currently a member of our localís executive board. I think itís beneficial to be a member of one or the other and always recommend joining. Feel free to message me!

NEA vs AFT

Here in Michigan, I don't think we individually choose. When I taught in the suburbs, we were with the MEA (NEA) and now that I teach in a large urban district we are with the AFT. We became a "right to work state" a couple years ago, but individuals still join their local union which is already connected to one or the other. (I think VA was one of the first RTW states, right? My sis lives there [Fairfax county] and tells me the teachers don't have a union. Obviously she's wrong.)

We have been increasingly disappointed by our union lately. The most recent is chatter that all three of our "teacher days" will have PD -- no opportunity to work in our classrooms. The district has also changed the calendar -- changing the date of our spring break. And now, doing away w/1 hour early dismissal -- meaning more instruction time and less planning time -- despite new math and ELA curriculums in the same year. All of these are violations of an existing contract. The union's response is "we do what's best for the kids." Hmmmm... This lead some teachers to say we should be w/NEA instead of AFT. I think both have been weakened by RTW and our republican governor. I'm not sure if it matters. Cuz yes, we just suffer on -- for the kids.

But yes, if I had a choice as an individual, I would choose NEA.
